Hi All,

Been having bit of a clutch problem, in it won't always change gear at speed, fine standing still.

Stripped the clutch plates out and the springs are well under spec, but whilst there I've noticed these marks on the inner basket, I'm sure caused by the spring.

What's causing it, should I be worried?

Your pic didn't show up, but if here are slight groves where the plate "tangs" touch the basket, that's normal wear for the most part.

Trouble shifting though will more likely be a shift fork or drum/shaft issue. The clutch only removes and applies power to the tranny. As well documented here you don't need the clutch to shift. Could be a bent shift fork or some other work bits.

yeh, cant get he pic to load, trying to use Flickr!

the marks are in fact grooves around the the inner basket bolt upstands, where the spring bolts go in, and the springs go around.

Im wondering why the springs would be interfering with these upstands, and i guess it could effect the pressure of the spings

hard to explain without a pic!

The marks on the posts are normal, just from the springs moving laterally under centrifugal force of the clutch spinning.

Hi Blade,

I've posted before. Bikes been standing since 97, I've rebuilt the motor but reused the old clutch, which I knew could be a mistake.

She changes gear fine at lower speeds but not at speed, it's as though the gear lever isn't returning. Honestly haven't tried clutchless changes as a test before I stripped the clutch. Stationary the lever feels fine, strong return spring and very little play, the bikes done 22k miles, though I think the one previous owner may have been a bit heavy on the clutch going by wear marks!

The marks on the basket concerned me as I have another donor engine, 33k miles, and there's hardly a mark on the basket.

Well, feel bit of a cock, but...

So remember the bikes been stood since 97..

Went for a ride after changing the clutch basket (out of spare engine) and springs. Ride up the road Nd no change, except the clutch feels stronger.

Get home and stood scratching my head.. So stood still it changes fine, moving it doesn't change gear unless I lift the gear lever. Sat on the bike the lever feels stiff, get of the bike and it feels fine...:mad:

Ping, light bulb.... The foot peg moves with the lever, surely that's not right!

Turns out the foot peg is seized to the gear lever, via the bush that goes through the gear change lever. So when riding my foot is stoping the lever to return and let the gear un engage for the next gear!!!

10 minutes with heat, drift and lube and all is right with the world :D

Feel a tit for not spotting it earlier but it all worked when I'm stood there changing by hand.

Lesson learnt, that's what it's about:)

:rotfl: well done Miles!!! Sometimes it takes a different view of things to get the whole picture. Very glad you got it sorted out. :thumb: However I will offer this. The footpeg itself should have a flat spot on it that "locks" it into the peg bracket, which is supposed to eliminate the problem you had with it moving with the lever. I would just put some eyes on that and make sure it's locking in properly. Otherwise, don't be hard on yourself. You took the time and effort to figure it out yourself and you did it. :clap:

Cheers Doohan, probably should have also mentioned that it has Harris rearsets on it so a bit different to the standard setup.

I'm looking out for a set of standard pegs though.

Soon as I figure how to post pics I'll stick a few before and after up.
