Has anyone had to put a new clutch in their bike? How does one know when it's time (other than 'oops...that oil had friction modifiers in it.')

Yes I know....probably a stupid question. But it'd be nice to know what signs to look/listen for so it could be replaced before something went pop, boom, or bang.

Any wisdom in replacing with something other than Genuine Honda Parts? Is there anything better that's made specifically for the 929?

Clutch replacement is usually required for one of two reasons:
1: The clutch begins slipping. You will notice the symptoms first in the mid gears (third and fourth), as this is where the power to weight begins to really load up the clutch. If the engine starts to rev shortly after you shift and the bike isn't accelerating normally, this is usually the first indication that the plates are becoming glazed or the friction material is getting thin.

2: The engagement becomes jerky or the clutch will no longer disengage as expected. This is usually caused by notches beginning to wear into the fingers of the basket (thus hanging the stack of plates). Although it can happen with the OEM plates, it is usually caused by the use of aftermarket plates that aren't cut to precisely the correct size on the tangs. The Barnett plates are famous for this. The solution here usually involves replacing the basket (not cheap).

A word of advice: Always replace the steel plates, the friction plates AND the springs whenever you service the clutch. Putting new components in alongside the worn ones only shortens the life of the new pieces.
