Hi there,im new here and my firt post is a problem.

Ive bought a 96 fireblade rrv,its a project that im busy with,the clutch is slipping at higher rpm,the last owner said he fitted a new one and he supplied a new set of heavey duty clucth springs with the bike.

Now ive pulled the clutch cover off and fitted the heavy duty springs,but wont work as they are close to coil bound.

I suspect there is a few friction plates missing?

Does any blade guru know how many plates should the clutch have in total?

V is '97 but '96 and '97 are the same model.
Ten discs including the judder disc.

How recently (in mileage) was the clutch pack installed?

Thanks for your reply.

Its not done many miles at all,some parts of the friction plates are dry!

Ive checked how many plates i have and it seems to many.

10 friction plates
9 clutch plates

This could be why the springs are coil bound as the stack is sitting to high!

Also at the bottom of the clutch basket is a " spring judder"? ive just got one at the base and thats all...is this correct?

The friction discs should've been soaked for some hours in oil before installation so they certainly should not be dry. Are the steels dark or blued from heat?
10 and 9 are correct.
Is the clutch hub locknut tight and staked?
Is the last outer disc seated in the fingers of the hub instead of in the basket like all the others?
Is the judder spring correctly installed in the centre of the judder disc?
Is the pressure plate correctly mated into the splines in the clutch hub so it drops fully into place?

I forgot to ask, did you buy it with a slipping clutch or has it just started slipping since?
Have you changed the oil recently?

Ive bought the bike with the clutch slipping...unknown how long its been like this but by judging the condition of the plates its not long been in there.

The clutch rings show no sign of heat damage,the oil is nice and clean but unknown if its motorbike type or car based...this probably is the fault.

The last friction discs was sitting in the hub,i thought this was a problem but you have shown me this is correct.

The center nut is tight and looks like its never been off,the basket shows light signs of wear but other than that ok.

The judder discs.... it has one flat plate which is first in the basket,then another thin sprung type plate? then there is a friction discs that has the center larger than the rest to drop over them...then its just a matter of refitting the rest...

I think the best thing for me to do is soak the plates overnight and do a oil change when the motor is back in place with the correct grade and go from there?

That would be my suggestion as well.
Use a good mineral or semi-synthetic motorcycle oil.

"Blade" do u know which way the concave on the judder spring goes , towards the motor or away from the motor? Thanx in advance.

The flat one goes in first.
The concave one goes on top of it so you will have a gap right around the outer edge of it. The convex side towards the engine. This puts the high point a few mm out from the hub centre so it can support the steel clutch plate that sits on top of it.

hi came across this post and need advice,
1997 900rrv... clutch works ok some slippage at v high revs all plates ok
brought new springs EBC CSK045 slightly thicker coils put them in and the clutch is solid
put old springs in works fine spring length are same withing a mm
right number of plates in right order with good oil cant explain why its binding

new springs are 50mm wear limit 49.2 in manual old springs are 49.6 ish but are tired

any advice cheers John
