my wife recieved a card in the mail yesterday that she did not apply for. does this happen to anyone else? how can they send you a card without applying? i called and asked if the would just send them out and i was told no, someone has to apply. i in return told them they needed to bump up their fraud unit. their response was we need to talk to her to cancel the card. wtf

What card did you get? CiTi bank has taken over some retail accounts (Radio Shack) and have reissued new cards with new accounts.

That sucks, means that someone had enough personal info to apply on your wifes behalf. Doesn't take much. Then they probably were hoping to intercept the card. Last week a consumer protection lawyer that has testified for congress against credit card companies gave us an hour long presentation of a lot of this stuff. Also, last year I had a bunch of personal information stolen so I had my credit red flagged. It is a fairly simple process. Now whenever I apply for credit I have to answer a bunch of extra questions but I feel it is well worth the piece of mind. They just give you an extra list of 5-7 questions that are all multiple choice that include weird things from your past that most people wouldn't be able to answer. Things like: which HS did you graduate from, which road did you live on three years ago, etc. It takes a lot more than your address, SSN, and Phone number.

You contact any one of the three credit reporting agencies, TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax. Do a search and you should come up with a phone number. You only have to contact one of the three and they will send the appropriate info to the other two. You also can order free credit reports from www.annualcreditreport.com

You can have one free report a year from each of the three agencies. So you can get all three at once or order one every four months from one of three so that you can keep a close eye on your credit. There are other websites like freecreditreport.com and others that sound the same but the eventually try to charge you money. The one I listed above is the only "authorized" free credit report website.

You for sure want to order one just to make sure that there aren't other unauthorized credit cards being used somewhere in you name.
