I have some ticking at warm up on my 2002 CBR954RR.
Does anyone have any answers? It really bothers me.
I think it's a tensioner but not sure.
If it is a tensioner, has anyone had any expercience in APE tensioners?

mine ticks untill the temp shows on the gauges when it gets below 10c even had the steelership look at it once the said its normal and its from the exhaust valve,my friend work as a tech for them as well and said the same thing they all tick
also cct's usually make noise in higher revs

My 954 did it till it warmed up and it sounded like it was coming from the left (clutch) side and my 1000 does it just not as loud.

Your bike is about to blow. I would run away as fast as possible. The pistons are hitting the valves, the cam chain is slapping the side of the block, the valves are loose, the injectors are clogged, the crank is wobbling, the bearings are locking up, the clutch basket has come unglued, and you may be low on blinker fluid. You might need to change your exhaust bearings as well.


All joking aside; The CBR is known for making noises, even after warm-up. When you make the power these bikes make something has to tick and click. You're going to hear all sorts of things you don't hear from your car because you are much closer to the non-insulated engine.

At warm-up you are likely hearing the clutch-basket rattle. The bike sits on the left side and there is no oil on the plates. It takes a moment for everything to get lubed, even after you have oil pressure. This is why it's important not to rev the bike to a high RPM before the bike is fully warm.
Take a moment to pull in the clutch lever and the noise will settle some. You could also sit on the bike and lean to the right and the noise will calm as well.

There is a lot going on in that motor, you are going to hear some noises, trust me, you're safe.

I guess the Canadian bikes are as backwards as their owners. My clutch is on the right side. In fact I can see the clutch cover in my avatar.

I can take a listen and tell you if it's normal, one of these days when we meet up for a ride...

I have an APE tensioner, not a big fan of it, especially after not having it set up correctly and my cam chain ate away at my chain guides. Many others have great things to say about them though.

Unless it's making the noise around 4500 rpm or so, I highly doubt it's the tensioner, probably just the clutch rattling or perhaps your injectors chirping away and the noise being ampified by the airbox which sits above them.

I notice more and more sounds on my 929. I just got it in January and by now I figure its just another sound that I didnt notice before. It runs great. MIne makes same noises.

Thanks guys,
I've talked to a few people and they said the same thing.

I'm used to riding twins and triples, haven't been on a four for awhile.

Makes since thought about the clutch as I hadn't heard the noise, since it was sitting on a rear stand at the shop, now that I have it at home it's noisy.

We'll have to ride soon. Are you going to the slimy crud ride on Sunday I should be there, just look for the tigger. I dont' think I'll be leading the group like last fall, go alittle out of hand started with 10-12 ending up haveing 30 people follow me, had one chick crash her bike, sucked. Give me a call I want to ride with you all busted plastic group maybe we could show up together in pine bluff. I think I'm leaving my house by about 10 am if you want to meet me here give me a call.

totally normal, my 954 ticks very noticable after starting, it's totally normal.

Sometimes it's the clutch, part of the sound is the exhaust valve.

How often should the Valves be checked for routine maintenance? I Just bought my 929 in january and it had 18,300, and now has 19,400 Runs good just wondering if and when I should have them checked and how much the dealers normally charge for this?

Manual says 16k I think... I'd expect to pay around $250-$300.
