Engine noise

Hi everyone,

I've started hearing some engine noise and it's getting louder. I've come to the conclusion that it's the timing chain due to the following: when in low revs and I open up on the throttle I get a bit of chain clattering noise...

My question is - generally when this happens on a Fireblade, does the chain need to be replaced or just the tensioner?

With my 600rr it was only the tensioner that needed replacement.

Thanks in advance!!!

I would assume just the tensioner. My 954 just hit 60k but never have replaced either.

Do both. You are right there. Chains stretch.

Replace both. You are there anyway. Gears wear out and chains stretch.
Don’t replace the chain, they last for tens of thousands of miles, as someone above mentioned he’s done 60k miles without issue, it’s possible that the tensioner could need replacement, could just need disassembly and cleaning, new Honda tensioners are approx £120, changing the chain would be a pointless waste of time and money.
PS they don’t stretch they wear, but below 100k miles don’t even think of changing the cam chain.
Manually tighten it and see if it goes away. Use an old Allen key. Sharpen the long end to resemble a flat head screwdriver. Remove bolt with sealing washer from end of tensioner. Wiggle the Allen key into the flat slot and turn it clockwise a quarter to half turn and see if noise goes away. If not remove clutch cover and see it the tensioner guide is broken. That will cause chain to become loose and get louder rather rapidly.
