I have a 95 SC28 blade thats going to get an engine transplant (dont ask, huge waste of time trying to sort main bearing problems) and am casting around to find a clean unmolested engine locally.

I hear the SC33 engine is a direct swap to the SC28 and if thats correct it opens up more options for me in my hunt.

Is the engine an idiot proof direct swap ?? Carbs (and Jetting) ?? Headers ?? All mounts ?? Electrics and stator??

What elephant traps are there for me if I find a clean low mile SC33 ??

I saw that one, but also took on that he had both sets of carbs, and did a stator swap. I read also that theres additional electronics (throttle body and speedo) but these seem optional ??

I am hoping to just do a 'one lump' exchange.. If theres more to it I will simply stick to finding an SC28.

At this point I have found neither engine, but it opens my options up if I can expand the years to the agents hunting for one for me.

Really you only need a "short block" (cases, crank, rods, pistons, oil pump and transmission - although it's probably simpler for you if it's complete with the head and cams as well) since you already have a complete engine and you can swap your stuff across to the new one and install it. If you buy a complete lump with the charging system, clutch, covers, starter, etc you're just paying more in purchase and shipping to end up with a shed full of spare parts.
I can ask around and see what's around here if you like.

No (re the short block) the last engine was pulled apart many times (while the bearings were sized to the modified insides, a big fat fail anyway), and in doing so I am nervous about its ability to withstand so many breakdowns. I was told by the guy who tried to do the other work, thats the last time this engine should come apart and I am not going to attempt it.

So I am 100% getting a full engine (low miles warrantied from one of the japanese import people here), just had too long and too much messing. In actual fact its the issue that theres been so much messing and I have had a solid run of no luck that is making me more nervous than usual about the SC33 being different. I dont want anything to be complex or not match or run rough. I want easy easy with zero possibility for problems. I dont want to find that I need to start part swapping out of the warrantied engine.. Will just have the other engine as a parts donor (especially if I find an 893cc). I know that seems like wasteful but here in Thailand theres some battles worth fighting and others worth paying not to fight.

Thanks for the offer of the parts hunt.. But the whole corrupt customs thing means I need to work via an agent who has a bent handler, they will do it cheaper than I can in bulk and theres a sort of system for japan bikes to be broken down and container shipped in. I also need all the customs tax paid paperwork properly done to legally register the engine change. Nothing is ever simple.

No worries :)
Bit surprised you need to register the engine change though. Don't you just sign a form notifying them of the change of engine number?

No, this is the 3rd world, anything that has a chance for the 'fragrant grease' will need to be 20 different forms, stamped by 20 different pricks, who all wont do a damn thing until they get a banknote folded in the paperwork.

As I say, theres battles to pick and battles to let someone else fight, showing my white face around the customs dept is not the clever solution for money or my sanity / quality of life.

So the verdict on the SC33 into a SC28.. Direct swap for everything ?? Carbs / jetting ?? electrical ?? And just ignore the throttle body sensor cabling and speedo cabling..

Just after a bit of reassurance or warning really.. My luck on this project has been foul.
