So I have the option to purchase an Ohlins rear shock, the part number is specifically for the SC28. This shock is discontinued, but I am told they are rebuild-able.

The question I have is, is there a benefit to using an Ohlins shock from a more modern fireblade on my SC28? From the SC33, SC44, SC50?

I have read that people swap in shocks from more modern blades, but I'm assuming this is due to availability?

Did Ohlins improve their shock technology between generations?

Piggyback reservoir shocks will not work from later 954/929 due to the battery box and a small cross member on the subframe being in the way. Also, the shock overall length and stroke differ from SC28 and both SC33’s. It’s not much, but there are changes in the top mount on the frame which led to the shock length change.

What model is the Ohlins for?

How many mm are we talking between SC28 and both SC33s? Longer or shorter? What about valving? Just for future reference.

The Ohlins is for SC28, my frame is SC28. I just wanted to be sure there is no benefit to getting an Ohlins shock from a more modern blade before I drop the dough. Sounds like the SC28 Ohlins would be best for me.

CBR900RR 1996-1997 305mm
CBR900RR 1998-1999 303mm"

Very helpful, thanks. Now that you mention it, I remember seeing that somewhere too.

I know the taboos of lowering sport bikes, but being a rather short rider I'm tempted to to put a 1998-1999 rear shock in my SC28 and drop the front accordingly...

It might be worth having a chat with an Ohlins dealer or servicing specialist .......

Given that the Ohlins have ride height adjustment, it would be good to know if:

1/ they are all the same part number and we achieve the correct length through that adjuster (feels unlikely),
or
2/ if they are different, where within the ride height range the std length is (can you both raise & lower ride height)
or
3/ can the wrong shock be changed to the right length with a replacement ride height adjuster?
or
4/ something else .....

If you see what I mean?

I find communicating with manufacturers regarding discontinued products gets nowhere. When they don't see a possible sale, no support exists. I have reached out to Ohlins, we'll see how it goes.

They do have 3 different part numbers for SC28 and SC33. One for SC28, one for 96-97 SC33, another for 98-99 SC33. Your dimensions probably check out.

Don't know why I didn't consider the body adjust ability of the shock, thought it might have just been pre-load.

Either way, it's always best to maximise travel, so if lowering a SC28, 98-99 SC33 shock might be best. Of course, given there are no adverse affects from valving or fitment of the shock. Springs can always be changed.

I'm positive Ohlins manufactured each shock to be able to have factory ride height, otherwise front to rear rake would not be standard when installing their aftermarket shock.

Doing some research on lowering now, even though everything I've skimmed in the past says not to do it. I feel I would really benefit from it.

Agreed.

I have a manual for an Ohlins Shock and the Length Specs say: Xmm +12/-0mm. Where Xmm is the Std ride height and therefore the minimum length ........

If all of this holds true, and you want reduced ride height, then by example, you could use a 96/97MY Ohlins Shock at the 305mm Std (min), and have adjustment to 317mm max. (2mm shy of the 92-95MY 319mm).

Could be a result?

Just checked all the Ohlins documentation for SC28 and SC33 rear shocks. Your dimensions from post 4 are correct.

Also, they are all +12/-0mm, so they are only meant to be used to increase shock body length, not decrease.

I have seen those lowering kits where they change the mounting position of the shock, not sure what to think of those yet. Still researching.

I'm not the original source however, I found an Excel spreadsheet with a bunch of different shock lengths listed way back when I had an SV650 and was looking for a better shock (ZX10R and ZZR1400 IIRC). There's nothing I've found that will suit the early Blades from other manufacturers though.

I stole this and have posted it before when researching for my Fox and Penske that I have on my 93 and 99 respectively. The ride height adjusters on both were worth their weight in gold.

Thanks for all the help, I passed on the SC28 Ohlins, glad I did. Going to hold off for a 98-99 Ohlins. Don't want to change the suspension geometry with those lowering "kits". :)

14mm shorter than a 92-95 shock (adjustable +12/-0), and only 2mm longer than a 98-99 ......... based upon that table of data.
Yeah I've seen it. The SC28 one was less than half the price so I was on the fence if I should go through with it anyway. I figure if I'm going to drop those funds might as well be for the one I want, which would be 98-99. I'm patient. :)
