Lead Character:
1997 model, and fairly low mileage..

Plot:
2 hour ride, decent pace, nothing to write home about, cool weather.

After riding to the destination, turning around, heading home, I'm about 3 miles away from home and I notice the temp guage hovering below max (i panic) and look around the bike as i'm moving, nothing leaking, nothing smoking, fan is not on, i get onto a short stretch of highway and I pick up the pace in hopes that the temp drops, it does, i'm now off the highway and just filtering my way through, about 1 mile left till i get home, the temp starts to crawl back up, still no white smoke anywhere, no smell of burning coolant, no fan.. :huh:

haven't looked at everything just yet but i'm going to check out the Fan switch, see if i get it to come on by feeding it live current.. i'm also going to check coolant/water level when the engine cools down, anything else I should be checking for?? :idunno:

Start tracing the fan wiring. Perhaps theres a fuse. Also, disconedt the fan and jump it directaly to 12 volts with a battery, maybe the fan itself is dead. Lastly, there is probaly a coolent temp sender to turn the fan on, see if it works.

i've got all that on the list of "to do's" for tomorrow and I just realized that I never bothered checking how old/new the coolant actually is... another possiblity I guess... oh well.. at least she still runs :thumb:

Make sure there's not a rock or stick stuck in the fan keeping it from turning first. Probably not, but it's an easy thing to do first. Then I'd check coolant level, fan fuse and the other stuff mentioned.

while riding I used my left hand to spin the fan manually and it did spin freely... i've been thinking it over and first thing I really should do is flush the coolant, change the oil and filter since none of that has been done since I became the new owner :crap: could be that simple... :smilebig:

On an old '89 CBR600 I had temps skyrocketing all of a sudden, which worried the chit out of me. Turned out to be the temp sending unit going south, a possibility G-Force mentioned.

You might want to check the water pump as well. The pump went dead on me at 40000km. Heard a slight whinning for about 2 days before it gave up the ghost! :mad:

How about the thermostat? It seems like a simple fix on it. I dont know why the fan wouldn't turn on, as it should be a thermal switch from the temp sensor. I also dont think a fan not running would let your temp skyrocket like it did. :idunno:

haven't had time to look at it yet but also wanted to mention that why i noticed the heat in the first place is cuz my clutch was engaging really oddly and i looked at the lever adjustment to make sure it hadn't come loose and then glanced over to the temp.. it felt like the clutch was slipping.

I'm sorry for you, but glad you found the cause. Thanks for sharing. That's one I would not have considered.

well what's actually happening is with the pinhole in the head gasket, the bike is forcing air through it into the coolant stream which then causes the coolant to make its way into the overflow and subsequently out the drip line and onto the road/back wheel/swingarm...

this could have been a dangerous situation... however the only time it really happens is in the higher revs and with 80% or more throttle... so if i were to boot around town at normal speeds, the coolant stays at a decent level and i only lose a bit which doesn't over heat the engine by much but if i run it a bit harder, say at a track day pace, i lose much more and the engine overheats much quicker. definately needs to be fixed either way.. :thumbd:
