G'day all, currently have a CBR954RR, have had this bike just over a month,

all it needed for the roadworthy was a front tyre which was replaced by the



previous owner, prior to me picking it up, all seemed fine until just recently

noticed that the brakes have been staying on slightly and the pads have

worn down significantly. so far i have removed the front wheel and

reinstalled according to the manual, checked the caliper pistons for free

movement all good there, reinstalled the calipers and followed

manual, prior to tightening right hand side axle pinch bolts, spun the

wheel while off the ground and still pads are grabbing even after applying

brakes on-off several times, only thing i can think now is sticking master

cylinder piston????.

Bike callipers have very small pistons compared to cars.

If you can't push them back with your fingers they are to stiff, unlike a car where if you can lever them back they are ok.

Oh and if you lever them back you can warp the disk.

Other opinions are equally valid.....lol....

Is it not worth taking the bike for a run. Some heat and use should free them up.
They are prob sticking due to sitting for a while.

Brakes on bikes, just like cars, as always going to be in contact with the rotor. Just with very, very little pressure. If you can spin your front tire with your hand relatively easy but still hear/feel a little resistance from the pads this is ok. Take it out for a easy ride for 5 minutes. Country road - don't use the front brake. After a few minutes of not braking, just slow to a stop with back brake only (Be careful obviously..this takes a while haha) get off the bike right away and grab the front rotors. If they're cool to the touch or even just warm enough to notice they're fine. If they're hot - you have a problem with calipers or MC.

Thanks for the replies, stripped the calipers and cleaned up the pistons, also the brake fluid was like jelly in behind the pistons, new fluid and seems to be good now, i should have realised as this bike was sitting for a while, :thumbd:

I needed to clean the front end up anyway.

Glad its sorted, just a quick one: i had the same issue and the brakes freed up for a few miles then started to bind again. Three strips later it turned out that i needed a new master cylinder piston and seals. £35 and an hour later and they were good as new
