Man am I full of questions lately. Will a front sprocket off a '96 F3 fit on my '98 900RR? I was kind of under the impression that the bikes of that vintage shared a TON of parts or were at least extremely compatible.

This would be a 14tooth sprocket. I'll be topping out at 145mph, according to my math. I don't really think I need those extra 20mph that I'd have with stock gearing. And I think the shorter gearing might be more conducive to track riding.

Will it fit? Opinions on dropping down two teeth?

Genuis! And yes, they are!

I'll see how my ghetto sprocket kit works out. Maybe I'll sack up and drop the money for a 520 kit.

Go for it. I just went -1/+2 w/520 kit on my 929 and absolutely love the hell out of it. This is approx equivalent to you dropping 2 up front. Best mod ever!

I'm looking at making a ghetto 520 conversion for my 900RR off things I found on ebay. All parts are brand new & in the box, mind you. F4i Vortek sprockets (15, 46), and a 120link 520 chain. Total price should be under $50 if this comes out right. :eyebrows:

I realized the F4i rear won't work. 6 bolt vs the 5 bolt on the 900RR. The front will though, according to Afam's site. I've got a good bid down on the chain already, so too late now to back out. I'll nab the front sprocket for a couple bucks, and then just wait until the rear comes along. :idunno: $70 for it, according to Afam's website.

Yeah, I wanted to go with -1 in front and +2 in the rear. But I wasn't going to argue if I came across a +3 rear sprocket for a couple bucks.

Anyone have a 45tooth rear sprocket for a 520 chain, that will work with a 900RR/F2/F3/F4?? :rolleyes: F4i/929/954 won't work.

why don't you just get a cush drive for the F4i?
that should be about 10 dollars as pose to a rear sprocket which may end up being about 20...

i'm not saying it will work but i'd try it if i were you.

I actually thought of this. But if you compare a 900RR rear rim to a 929/954/F4i rear rim, you see why it won't work. The 900RR rear is designed for a 5 bolt. F4i is 6. :mad:

I think Afam's price of $70 for a rear is a little high. You should be able to snag that thing for $30-$45. try maw.com or do a quick google.

Will do. I googled it last night and only tried the first two or three sites I came across. One is local, and they want like $53. Kneedraggers wanted $46 for it, but with shipping I'll probably be better off just riding 30 blocks to the local shop and getting it there.

I'm too stingy to buy something first without an exhaustive search for the cheapest. :D

the cush drive is what the sprocket bolts on to... if you used an F4i/929/954 cush drive, it would accept a 6 hole sprocket. doesn't hurt to give it a go..

Hmmm. Maybe I have this wrong (I'm somewhat new to bikes anyways). This is what I had been thinking: The sprocket bolts to the metal deal (thought this was the cush drive). The metal deal then has the rubber spacers/dampers/whatever, and then is the rim.

If I'm understanding aforementioned part correctly, the problem is the metal deal on the 900RR is designed for a 5-star pattern with the rubber bushings, and is bolted to the rim in a five bolt pattern. The F4i is a 6-pointed star design and bolts to the rim with 6 bolts.

Like I said, I could very easily be wrong in my understanding. Can you supply some pictures of said part so that I can eliminate vocabulary as our communication glitch?

are you kidding I think I spent 5 or 6 hours trying to find my helmet for less than the suggested $500. found it for $430 I think

take the rear wheel off and you'll find out what i mean.
first thing to do is get a friend over to yours or you take your wheel to his, take his 929/954/f4i wheel off and see if you can swap out the cush drives, using either his rubber bushings or yours.. the cush drive seperates from the wheel very easily.. it's not bolted down.

I'm not trying to argue or anything. Just want to make sure we're all on the same page. If you guys tell me that it will work for sure, then I'll buy that 2nd listing I just pasted and the F4i sprocket I found and be done. Just want to be sure first. I've never taken this apart, and just want to make sure the innards of my rim will accept this (my manual shows the inside as repeating the 5 star pattern).

okay based on the pictures (Great examples by the way) it won't work.
I wasn't sure if it worked but now i am. the only way to use a F4i/929/954 sprocket on a 900RR is if one were to use a F4i/929/954 rear wheel, cush and sprocket. sorry mate, i thought it was a helpful suggestion. I have a set of 929 wheels and I thought they'd be a straight swap, guess your research helped me out... :smilebig:

good thing i have a spare cush for my F4i..
i guess the only answer is to buy the right sprocket... sorry mate.
