Hello All,

A friend of mine recently told me he had an 03 954 sitting in his garage for the last 10-12 years with 5k original miles. The bike is cherry, its been garaged and covered. I tried to help him bring it back to life, replaced all the fluids. got to the gas tank, was not pretty, he said he had fuel stabilizer, but not sure how long its supposed to last, anyways, the fuel was full of gunk and corrosion. pulled the pump out and it does not work, thinking its bad or gummed up with bad fuel. my question is, can the tank be cleaned out of corrosion and how do i clean it? also, can i soak the fuel pump assembly in solvent to free it up of bad fuel?

THen we might miss out on making a friend.
I wasn't meaning to sound rude, What i meant was i have bad habits of asking questions on the forums before i google stuff. I have had some great results here on the forums from other users.

The group here is pretty friendly. I think you can get away with about anything except asking what the twisty thingy on the right does.

Helping a friend, Im mechanically inclined. my friend bought another fuel pump from ebay. not sure what the fuel in the lines may have done. I have not had a chance to clean the tank for him yet. once its cleaned i will try to put clean fuel in it. not sure what the the injectors look like or if the old fuel will burn off. but i will keep you all updated.

To clean the tank, empty out the gunk, put the old fuel pump back in, buy about five/six gallons of the cheapest white vinegar and fill it up to the brim. Add salt (1/4 of container) and let it sit for five days. On the fifth day add baking soda and enjoy the lava show (keep adding every time the lava reaction stops). After all the gum and crap ooze out, (because of the baking soda) clean the tank out with water then gas then dry gas as fast as you can (this process usually take me a couple of hours). Do not let it sit when you are done or you will get flash rust within minutes. Add two stroke oil/gas mix and make sure to swirl and coat the entire inside of the tank and let dry (this keeps the rust from coming back). If the tank is bad, you will know, the acid will eat through all of the rust and reveal any structural problem with the tank. Put the new used fuel pump back in and add some gas. Add some power to the pump and analyze the condition of the gas coming out. If the gas is clear and clean like it was put in you are good to go. If not, you will need to continue to recycle the clean portion of the fuel back into the tank to pump it out again until it hopefully clears up. If it doesn't want to clear up, you can add an in-line filter or just buy another pump...

Or if you like to work hard, you can get a can filled of bolts and nuts, put them in the tank and spend the next fifty hours of your life shaking the bolts and nuts around in there to scrape off all the rust and corrosion.

its been a bit since i posted this topic, I was to able help my buddy with the rust removable. got the bike all put back together. it actually fired up pretty easy, (All fluids were replaced)!, warmed up and went to idle. after we fired it up a few times, it started running like crap below 4,500 RPMS. also white smoke pours out. not sure if the rings did not seat properly or not, or it blew a gasket, or just really old plugs or bad fuel injectors, the bike did sit for 10 years, engine only has 4,500 miles on it.changing the plugs will be next. I was advised by my local shop to dab the plugs with some motor oil to help the rings seat? any thoughts? @spagiratwink Any thoughts Bill?
