Its almost riding time and I am just starting to make a list of things to do before summer starts. I have an 02 954rr with 8000ish miles on it, and I want to do lower the front sprocket to a 15 tooth, which seems like its the accepted standard here.

My question is, I was always told its bad to change just the sprocket without a new chain... I am extremely cheap and saving 180 dollars here would allow me to do some more work to my dirtbike. Plus its a ton easier to just change the front sprocket, than to do the whole chain.

I think its a pretty basic question, pretty univeral too. At 8000 miles my stock chain and sprockets look fine, they would probably last until 15,000, but they are not exactly new. I only want to do this mod because the CBR is geared way too high stock.

If you get a new chain you should change the sprockets too. You'll be fine to just put a 15t front sprocket on with the chain you have. You might want to get a speedohealer too.

The old chain will wear the new sprocket out much more quickly and in 7,000 miles you will be replacing both sprockets and the chain. Replace both now and you can get 15,000 miles out of all of them.

I have a 929 and it has a 40 on the rear and a 522 front does that number mean 22tooth and if so why would the add 6 teeth to the front I am confused on this and really don't have any of the bikes history could someone explain please

that just doesn't sound right. I don't know why anyone would want to go that small on back. and 22 on the front makes no sense. count the number of teeth on the front.

Thanks for all the fast replies. Ther verdict is still out, I have almost convinced myself that I will just spend the 30 bucks try out the gearing and if I like it I can switch it all over. Chains are expensive and I would rather wear this one out then get a new one then throw away a pretty decent chain.

There is saving money now and then there is saving money down the road. In the end, it will be more expensive if you just replace the sprocket now.

i have replaced my sproket (from16 to 15) at 12000 km and now have 17000 and no problem with chain.
my friend have change it also and have made even more mileage and no problem too.
the speedometer indicate about 10km/h less than real

It's probably a part number.
If you can see the number why don't you count the teeth?

The speedometer will indicate a _higher_ speed than real if you lower the gearing.

Install the sprocket and run it as is. Yes the old chain will put more than usual wear on the new sprocket, but it should be a while before both need replacing.
