When I am in first gear and I take it to a high rpm, and pop it in to second, the gears tend to grind. What can I do to minimize this?

It happens only sometimes. Either when I shift too slowly up, or if it is in an awkward position. Normally when muddling at slow speeds and I let the rpm fall too low before a shift.

Also previously I had adjusted the shift lever, then went to put it back. And I am not sure if it has to be at a specific height level. :idunno:

my $0.02 worth:

You might try preloading your shifter. And shift when the engine speed is up to the point where it "matches" the road speed by letting off the throttle a bit and pulling in the clutch lever fully.

It clunks because you are shifting through neutral, thereby needing to excercise a bit more care and precision.
