There is a guy not too far from me that has a 96 cbr 900 in decent shape with rod that went through the block. He wants 1500 I think he is crazy. Does anyone know or can tell me if a good deal can be made of this? I can do all the work myself so that is no problem. I am just familiar in cost. Thanks to anyone who can give me advice. I guess I need a running motor or a block to rebuild.

When a rod fails in a big way it's a given that other parts of the engine are only a step short of doing the same, so start with a new engine is my advice.
US$1500 sounds far too high for a bike without an engine. Did he happen to say anything along the lines of it being too expensive to fix and that's why he's selling it :)

Getting a new block and crank (and anything else that's worn) and building a new engine is going to be far more expensive than swapping in a new engine. Depending on how far you have to ship it I would think you could get an engine for under a grand.
Throwing a rod is likely to cause bent valves and a warped head as well.

New cases are $1324.

New crank is $733.

A new rod is $144.
A new piston and pin is $72.
New rings will be $120 for the set.
Head gasket is $60.
New rod and main bearings will be $155 but you'll need the codes from the new cases and crank and rods to know what size bearings to order.

Offer him 850 cash right now and go pick it up.
so that will be a good deal? I spoke to him again just to find out more about the condition of the bike. All it has are regular nicks and some scratches. He never dumped it. He did tell me that his friend has a running engine that he will sell for 600 buck so he must be in need for money. I guess since I can do the swap pretty easily that getting this bike for around 1500 with the engine is a good deal right? I just want to know that it is a good if not great deal. It looks like the bike on the top of this page without the lettering. It has custom paint work.
Thanks
Alex

P.S. I will offer him tonight

Sounds fishy to me. His mate has an engine so why don't they fix the bike for nothing to increase its value and make it sell easier and split the profits?
I'd go and see this engine first to make sure it's good and is actually for sale.

I suggested the same thing. I think he is broke and can really use the money. If you google "1996 cbr 900 thrown rod" you will find it. Looks good to me. He said he has a clean title ready.
