Hi guys- just fixed my reg/rec and started it up. All great, then it just kinda died, started it again and coughed and died a couple more times. Turned the idle up a bit to where it would normally idle about 1200 rpm and started it up- 5k greeted my ears with lots of backfiring (it backfires a bit with a micron race can on with no baffle anyway, but this was much more + louder than the usual pops).

The idle screw is absolutely fine- but I'm thinking maybe a carb rebuild will fix this up?

so have you been able to put the idle back to 1,200rpm?

there could be many things causing it not to idle so difficult to diagnose. it may be that the carbs are flooding the motor at idle which a strip and clean might cure, but could be any number of things tbh....

Backfiring and popping are two very different problems.
Backfiring is an ignition problem.
If it was running fine before you changed the regulator I can't imagine anything has changed in the carbs. How long as it been sitting?

Only about a couple of days: Larry, you're right, nothing had changed. The throttle cables that sit under the subframe thing had been moved, pulling on the throttle cable, making the difference between 1k and 5k at idle. Cheers!
