This movie looks like it's going to be excellent. I'm trying to get a group from work together to hit opening night on Friday. Anyone else have plans for this one?

It's a war movie with no fighting, and the makers "claim" no politics.

Sounds different, but I'll wait.

WE will see how well it does,if the Marine Corp recruitment numbers go up.

Looks like a good movie. But, think I will wait for the DVD.

Been to that area too many times to count. Seen enough.

Will wait for the reviews of my fellow bladers.

My father (former USMC Technical Advisor to the movies) has been getting very bad comments about this movie. I have been dying to see it, but after reading some of the reviews by everyone from retired Marines to active duty generals that run in his circle have all said, "It's a waste of time and money"

The man who took over my father's position in the Corps sent out the following email:
The movie is based on a book written by a Portland Or resident named Stoffard. His book was reviewed by the Leatherneck last year and received a "Do not waste your money and buy" recommendation. In other words It Stinks.

Gentlemen,
Over the past week I have received a number of Emails regarding the new movie "Jarhead". None of the Emails contained a positive review or comments on the film.
The below comment comes from what I would consider to be a very good source. Pete is in the movie business.
I'll take his advise and save my money. I'll wait until it comes out at the video store.

A warning.
I went to a screening last night.
Just a bad movie. Very disappointing. It would have been better suited for Showtime. Cheap, boring and absolutely nothing interesting going on. What script? Don't expect "Black Hawk Down" or a film about brotherhood, honor and commitment.
If you like to see Marines crying, having emotional breakdowns and running around naked, a lot (the director is gay, true, Sam Mendes, the writer of American Beauty, remember Chris Coopers role as a Nazi collecting Marine that kisses Kevin Spacey(also Gay) at the end of the film) it maybe the best film of the year for you.
Enough said. Save your money for next years Clint Eastwood film "Flags of our Fathers" about the flag raisers at Iwo Jima during WW II. That might be a story about Marines.
Also I hear the book "Bullet" is good. Written by a Marine in Afghanistan.

I feel like I still want to see it simply because I've been waiting, but these guys have not let me down on a movie since "A Few Good Men"

Watched it last night. Remember the first half of Full Metal Jacket, when the marines are in training? Well that's Jarhead. At least with FMJ you had the payoff of watching some kick-ass carnage in the second half. The second half of Jarhead basically has them sitting in Saudi Arabia picking their asses.

There were some haunting moments when they're marching through the oilfields... but that was only 15 minutes out of the show.

I guess I still enjoyed it, but don't go to it expecting a war movie in the traditional sense. This is a movie about "being a marine".

It's authentic (as far as I can tell), from the former Marines I worked with who were deployed to Desert Storm. I agree, not a traditional war movie.

I can absolutely tell you, most everything in this movie happened, with the exception that it did not all happen to the author of the book.

I have mixed feelings, in that this shows a side of service not normally embraced by Hollywood, the duldrum and details of the soldiers in general and deployment to Desert Storm specifically.

A lot of this (content) people who have served in other branches can directly relate to....

I'll save any further comments for a spoiler thread, if it pops up.

A good friend was in Desert Storm (army engineers).

It was pretty much a boring, albeit miserable (one word, MOPP), experience for him. I can imagine a movie based on that battle would be boring as told from most troop's POV.
