Hi, could you lift the bike off the ground with paddock stands rotate the wheels and check the chain rotation in the front sprocket area, if its a knock and not rpm associated , then it could be something catching:smileBill

From your description Bursby, sounds like Bill may be on the right track. My guess... your drivechain and sprockets are beat. Check chain slack with your manual (or Google it), and assess the teeth on both sprockets. A loose chain, under a load, will make a knocking or banging sound, but usually the rider will notice a momentary hesitation of acceleration which accompanies this. Wearing headphones could somewhat "mask" a rider's sensisitivity to this.

If a loose drivechain is your culprit, you may get out of it by proper adjustment. If it's not a chain, perhaps having an experienced rider of a friend ride along side of you, listening for the noise, would also be a good option.

Good luck and keep us posted :thumb:

any images of the sprocket(s)?

that chain does look rather overdue for some tightening, cleaning, and proper lubrication. no, WD40 is not a proper cleaning agent NOR lubricant :nono:

heres some pictures....yes that is a doulbe A battery... i seee that is way too much,,,, would that cause the knocking noise
Where you are measuring the chain (and the visible slack shown) would lead me to believe that your chain is EXCESSIVELY loose.

You should try to get the measurement at the mid point between sprockets.

And yes, a chain with excessive slack will knock on the swing arm/engine case like crazy.

Now you've done it Casey:huh:

cb7guy I would take the time to clean the **** out of that chain, inspect it along with the sprockets and lube everything up good . An overly loose chain will make a lot of noise and wear the sprockets quicker than normal. You can adjust the chain just as it states in the manuals that you have for those other bikes or youtube it. If it's not the chain then we can move onto the next thing and you will have possibly increased the retail value just be cleaning that thing up.

:plus1::plus1: That chain is as loose and dry as a 50 year old h**ker...

It's definitely making some noise, even if it's not the only problem. Get it fixed before you throw a chain and turn a little problem (hopefully) into a catastrophe!

$1200-1500 is not giving away a 2000 Shadow 750, especially in the pictured condition. I have a buddy that picked up the same bike in mint condition 2 years ago for $1500 to use as a daily driver to keep the miles off his R1 and save the tires, and his back, for the canyons. He mounted some black ebay hard saddlebags for $200 to carry his lunch and jacket and it looks good. Not trying to be a d**k, just a realist. It's the 750, not the 1100, and the pic's show it's in rough condition.

I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on this one:

Aside from the chain being way too lose (and you possibly getting sued / charged with murder if you sell it as is without full disclosure), there seem to be something wrong with your , and . keys.
