looking into a new comp. and was thinking about a laptop. Is it safe to say that I should not even think about replacing a desktop with a lap. Would be nice to take with me sometimes but I've heard that they have more problems then a desktop...?

If you're got the cheese (ahem, practicing my slang), then the best laptop is on par with the best desktop... it will simply cost 2X-3X as much.

So yes, there are viable desktop replacements out there, they'll simply cost more than a comparable desktop.

I just switched... I've always had desktops, then a less powerful laptop for travelling. I just bought a high powered laptop to use all the time now. I have a docking station at home with a a full size keyboard/mouse.

I've got a 19' monitor I was going to use with it, but I think I'm going to hold off and get a 19' LCD screen to use with it at home.

I hear that the new chip there...Cetrino or whatever it is runs much cooler and the bat. last almost twice as long. I had a guy at circuit city tell that the monitor was not covered in the warranty and that if the hard drive went on it that it would take a Tech. 2.5 hours just to get the drive out! I ran out of the place after hearing that. Still trying to get more info. Nice setup there Conq....

Dell baby...small, compact, powerful!

I used to have a desk top at home and in the office and a lappy that I used for business and personal traveling with a docking station at both home and work networked to each respective desktop...now I have only the lappy at work and a desktop at home for when I don't care to bring the lappy home...it's kind of a pain carrying it on the bike.

Circuit City - been there, gave them a shot a year ago(desktop). Obviously, they only hire the most qualified sales people . Plus, I think their selection was limited to Compaq and other such sh*t.

'CHANGE' type disclaimer - sorry to any of you Compaq owners out there, if any.

Whoops, guess I struck a raw nerve w/someone.  Ended up mail ordering a comp from ABS Technologies   .  Dealt with them before and had good luck, and saved a good
few $$ - so far this one (AMD based) has been flawless.  I tried Dell (every time I talked to a sales person I was fed a different line, and just plain lied to), Gateway (idiots at the local outlet).  I like AMD anyway sooo.  I don't really know that much about Compaq, other than I have heard many more gripes than kudos regarding them.

Edit: oh, forgot to explain bacillus. Baketech called me that [a pathetic play on Bacchus ] some time back in a thread, so I added it to my avatar for his amusement.

Bacchus : Quote (ConqSoft @ Aug. 08 2003, 7:48pm)AMD!?  OMG!
And just WHAT is wrong with AMD?!  Seriously, why don't you like the brand? Haven't read up on them for a year or so, but I thought AMD always out-performed Intel
AMD + CAD = An expensive lesson in frustration....

Well, I just use my computer for important tasks, like living on this forum and checking porn sites, so I guess I don't have to worry about that technicality

Edit: Er, sorry BT, I realize your reply was a serious one (who'da thunk ).

I'd recommend getting a Toshiba laptop, they're excellent.

As far as AMD goes....This is my first AMD machine ever out of 5-6pc's that I've owned and it's been flawless. Great for multimedia stuff, and the motherboards usually have more neat features. I like mine, I'll probably end up with another one. They're cool to play with. Now if it came down to building a serious computer that would be put to heavy use, I wouldn't think about anything but Intel.

Toshiba

I have used them exclusively in manufacturing environments for PLC programming, machine setup etc. Watched several name brands die horrible deaths under the same duty.

I am an old bastage that lived thru the 'luggable' era....anyone remember those....38lbs with orange plasma screens......LOL
When consumer type laptops started coming into the factories, the only ones that lasted well were Tosh....I am guessing that there are others now that do well, but so many field service guys learned the lesson that they have stuck with them...

When we had outside vendors come in to do machine service....the good ones always carried Toshiba.

I had a real problem when Toshiba got busted for selling Sub secrets. My next laptop purchase was a ##### and it was a total POS. Ended up going back to Toshiba....felt guilty, but I needed something reliable.

Edit:
Sorry for the threadjack MacMan....

FWIW, I am going thru a similar choice...since I am unemployed, I don't have access to a laptop anymore, and miss the flexibility. I am fairly certain that my next pc will be a decent laptop, then I'd like to upgrade my router to wireless, so I can work anywhere in the house. I doubt if I will ever be desktop free though, I do solid modeling CAD work, and the graphics cards in even the best laptops are a bit off the mark. I would however like to test drive the new generation ones that can dynamically allocate RAM for video RAM....
