Having just come back, I have to say, it was damn hot in Europe. A lot of the time it felt like a Sydney summer, and if oyu have ever been her ein summer, you know that it's damn hot. Feel sorry for them, even in Innsbruck it was like 30 degrees some days.

WHAT!?!?!
Quote PARIS - About 3,000 people have died in France of heat-related causes since abnormally high temperatures swept across the country about two weeks ago, the health ministry estimated Thursday.

We had abnormally high temps here most of the summer. I think three people died from it (and that's stretch). SARS really hammered Toronto and parts of China.. yet I've not heard of a single death in the US from it.

Hm.. looks like socialized medicine is *maybe* not such a good thing, eh? Plus the French might consider investing more energy in air conditioning research/aquisition than casting 'NO' votes in the UN.

How the F*** did that many people die there that fast!?!!? That's just baffling. I feel very sorry for them and their families.. but I don't understand how sub-100 degree temps are killing all those people.... there is something big missing from that picture.

Another interesting quote:
Quote To protect the elderly, the city government's 13 retirement homes bought extra fans and atomizers to keep their residents cool in a country where air conditioning is not widespread.

Record-high temperatures have been set in numerous cities across France, and the capital has baked under heat exceeding 98 degrees. The average August temperature in Paris, which has warm but not torrid summers, is 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once again, the French government has failed to take the action required.. this time it's allowing it's own people to die. How sad.

I don't believe that that many people have died. When the US has had those heat waves in the north where hardly any of those people have air conditioning, you only hear of usually a tops of 5 people dying from the heat. Not to mention that that is usually over the course of a couple of weeks not a couple of days as the article is saying.

I say f#ck 'em and feed 'em fish heads. There's no excuse as to why a non 3rd world country such as France cannot take care of a problem like that.

I think God's just punishing them for their recent actions or lack thereof.

Oh, just went and reread the article. 'Record temperatures of 98 degrees'? Jeez, here in Texas that is comfortable compared to a summer that we had 2 years ago or so where we had over 30 straight days of over 100 degrees. Bunch of damn French pansies.

Yeah, that's just so weird. I lived in an area where it'd get over 100º every day for a month straight, and only into the 80's at night. Many people didn't have AC, and you didn't have all these elederly people dying every summer.

I'm guessing anyone who dies, and is old, they're blaming the heat.

We here in Utah have been in a drought and heat wave period of five years. Other surrounding states are in similar predicaments. During the month of July alone we had temps 100+ for 15 days in a row.
In the five year period we MAY have lost 20 lives due to heat alone, and most of those attributed to urban outdoorsmen that have little to no protection.

Send the intellectual giant hans blix in there to find and correct the problem.
What a bunch of pussies.

I can't believe that number is accurate. I know these socialist wimps only work about a 24 hour work week, but come on. These are the same people that want to complain to the world that the US was misusing its' power in response to the 9/11 attack. Amazing, isn't it, that they are now claiming the number of dead in their own country equals the death toll from the terrorist attack on our country. This from lack of air conditioning! Maybe we should attack them for being so backward and stupid. They accuse us of having too much of everything and denounce our way of life, and then have 3000 of their own people die from their 'enlightened' lifestyle. Frankly, these idiots deserve what they get. It's sad innocent people have to die, but it is the people that have bought into this lazy, elitist, socialist, ignorant way of life. They look at the US and see nothing but evil and greed. They miss the fact that it is our freedom, our way of life, and our work ethic that makes us successful. They are too busy thumbing their noses at us and bitching to see the answer to their problems right in front of their faces. We are the example they need to emulate, not despise and envy. Oh...that would take great effort. We know they won't be doing that any time soon!

Part of the story is that they have had to curtail electricity usage because they are dependent on nuclear power. The cooling towers run at lower efficiency in the heat.....meaning the water they discharge into the river is warmer than normal ie....environmental concerns. The only way to keep the same temp is to lower the reactor output.....

They had to make a choice between less energy production or more environmental damage......

Of course, they could always build more power plants or find alternative sources of energy. They had no trouble setting up Iraq with nuclear reactors, so what's the problem? Isn't the safety of their own people more important? Hmmmmmm.......

In the meantime I read that it's near 130 degrees in Iraq. Good thing they didn't send troops, that would have killed the lot.
