Hi guys!
My 93 CBR900 is really loud going into first gear. Big clunk compared to my 98 CBR. Is it just age?
My clutch seems to be adjusted right.....but could I have a stretched cable?
Gearbox seems to be working well besides the first gear clunk.....shifts well, stays in gear, all gears sound good, and neutral is easy to find.
Oh, and my idle is about 1100.

Handcuffed by design:
2 and 7 spin with the engine.
5 and 9 spin with the rear wheel.

Pull the lever in, 5 keeps spinning in N.
9 drags on 7 as you step to 1st.

To eliminate the noise altogether = Engage into 1st before starting.
To eliminate the bang = Wait 5 seconds or more for 5 to stop spinning.
To eliminate the clunk = Turn the radio up more... (GM's answer to a loud rear end).

All of the three sport bikes I've had made a pretty good clunk when shifting out of neutral.

Idle speed that is too high and a clutch without enough travel will worsen it, as will oil that is too thin or worn out.

A bent or cheap clutch lever may not be pulling the cable far enough to disengage the clutch all the way. If that is the case, they're usually hard to get into neutral too. You'll know if the cable is stretched when you run out of free play adjustment.

I did notice that my 900 made almost no noise for the first few hundred miles on a fresh oil change.

Oil thickens when getting old = Sticky plates.
Plates break lose you ever so slightly pull the lever in... go try.
Warp steel plate acts the wave washer, buckles out and takes up the released gap = Hard finding N- Lurches forward- Grinds gears it won't go in.

But a clunk- no gear grind- no heading for some rear bumper with clutch in- no sore ankle finding N = Normal "handcuffed" action.

Electrically handcuffed to the electrics = Either one is at FULL power or Limped.
Mechanically cuffed to the design = Is why synchromesh transmission rings don't wait for the one shaft to stop spinning in 1st, lets apply it to all gears, add weight and mass to the engine case or stick with a formula 1 transmission basically.

It's the roar of the gearbox. I can sell the bike and stay off them, or I can take a man pill and live with design.
