Ok, a little background... my 2000 929 has 59,000 miles on it, never done any suspension work on it and it's been down lightly twice (once in the grass, but both times <20 mph). Don't thisnk this issue is related to her going down because that happened over a year and a half ago and it's just getting bad now.

Here's the problem(s):

When I'm in turns, especially low speed (10-20 mph), I feel like the back end wants to come out from under me AND the front end wants to bobble. She used to hold lines so stable and smooth, now it's kinda scary!

At higher speeds it feels a bit more stable, but the front end still bobbles on me and I don't feel firmly planted on the road like I used to... and if I hit any rough pavement (even a slightly so) it can send me way out of line.

I've been told I should have my steering stem bearings done, but I can't help but think that's only a small part of what's going on. Anybody have any advice on what to do? Fork rebuild? Rear suspension? I've also given thought to going to GMD Computrack for their 3D frame alignment, but I don't want to throw good money at something that won't fix my problem. Anybody have experience with them? I just want my 929 to handle like she used to (she's a street bike, no track days)... any help is greatly appreciated.

I think you've already answered your own questions. With 59K on the clock, you need a fork rebuild, rear shock replaced/rebuilt, head bearings checked/replaced, and it probably would be smart to have GMD check everything for alignment. If you plan on keeping the bike it would be money well spent...not to mention the huge improvement in handling.

I think the recommended fork oil change interval is somewhere 7k miles.
I haven't done anything specifically with the forks -- the last place I went for my 48,000 tune-up said they "checked" them and all was well.

Thanks Red, I was afraid I'd hear that, but I want to make sure I wasn't throwing money at no good, either. Not many people here with this kinda mileage to relate to and I feel like I'm getting a sales pitch anytime I call a service center.

I plan on keeping this bike for a while yet -- been through a lot with it. Guess it's just time to bite the bullet. :crap:

Actually it sounds like the Swingarm bushings are shot. What you describe is exactly how my CB900F acted. It got so bad at one point I could actually see the swingarm move from side to side when applying the rear brake. After having them replaced, the bike was on rails again. Replacing or servicing the head bearings are a good idea also.

You just reminded me of the other issue I wanted to bring up... when I'm changing lanes and hit the painted lines or even a groove in the pavement, the bike loses it's mind!

It feels like the front and back are swinging side to side on me... if fact they are, I can see it. Hard to explain exactly, but it's very unnerving.

Nope, no damper... never felt I really needed one until recently. I'm the original owner, all the miles are mine. I guess as the bike gradually "aged" I didn't notice... but now the handling's poor enough it's hard to miss.

Hate to ask the dumb question, but how badly worn are your tires?
What pressures do they have in them? When did you last check pressure?

Not a dumb question at all... I check pressure once every 1-2 weeks, but have fairly good tread left on Pilot Sports right now. As usual, back is more worn than the front (impossible to avoid chicken strips in Florida), but the back probably should be replaced in <1000 miles now.

Not a bad idea... I actually recently purchased a manual but have yet to "break it in". Given this was the one trustworthy dealer near me, does anybody have any recommendations for fork rebuilding?

My 929 has 25,000kms on it and developed some pretty querky handling not that long ago - which was wierd because I'd been really happy with it earlier. My problem was that the front tyre was chewed out so much that the profile of it had been altered. It went round corners real well when I had it planted on the big flat spot I'd worn, but on anything approaching/passing the flat spot the bike would wriggle and flex around like crazy - bobbling would be another way of describing it !.

I don't know about fork rebuilds, or swing arm bushes, or rear shock replacement - but figure at 59-60K you really should get 'em checked out if only for your peace of mind.

A rear tyre that is squared off will have the same sort of effect you describe as it tries to steer the bike from the rear, and doesn't like leaning over.

In my case it was a new set of tyres that fixed the problem, sure a whole lot easier than doing all that other stuff !.
