Try not to laugh too hard, as I know just enough about bikes to get me into trouble.

Okay, switched out the front lines today for a Galfer setup, and changed the pads to Galfer OEM replacements.

By the way, I couldn't have done this without the help of a friend........because pumping that damn lever for over an hour gets tiring.:D

Anyway, during the test ride (here it comes), I notice when applying the brakes, there's a flutter sound like tweety bird passing a silent but deadly, if you know what I mean.

My rotors are not warped, my brakes are working fine, the pistons were cleaned, all bolts were snugged, and the lines are through the OEM brackets on the fenders, zip tied to together, and then zip tied to my horn mount.

So, the question is, is this the bedding in of the pads? I only ran it 6 miles home as I was running late for work. It is in the application of the brakes, as that is when the sound starts, and it's pretty consistant in loudness and tone until about 5 mph, when the pitch drops suddenly.

That definitely sounds like an interesting problem.

I love the description - A Tweety Bird passing a "Silent but Deadly".

My guess is it's the pads. Did you do anything to clean the rotors?

I think that is normal my EBC's do that and from the searches I have done others have the same noise.

Do you mean like a whizzing type noise? Cause every set of sintered metal pads that I have run make that noise. I love that sound.

Did you remove the old glazing off the rotors? When you change pad brand/compounds you need to remove the old residue on the rotor so the new pad beds in correctly. If you simply replace them with the same ones, just put them in and break them in.

The Galfer pads make that bzzzzzzzzt noise, it's normal. When I had Galfer pads on, they did that. Sounds kinda cool. The stock pads don't do it.

Methinks you took the long way around if it took an hour. I just rebuilt my fronts from scratch, took the lines and calipers off, cleaned them and dipped the caliper blocks. When I put it back together, I filled the reservoir, bled one line about 15 strokes, refilled the reservoir, did the other line and had pressure within 20 strokes. I then bled both sides and the M/C, waited 5 minutes and repeated the bleeding. Total time less than 25 minutes start to finish.

My EBC's do that as well.
It scared the crap out of me the first time I took it out to bed the pads.
I did not put in my ear plugs and they were howling. I love the sound.

My new brake pads did that too. I just wonder why, if this that sound is normal, it doesn't do it with the original ones....

Thanks for all the replies, truly.

I feel better now. I noticed the sound w/ out helmet 1st, and on the ride home could hear it with helmet. I've never heard it before, as I always bought OEM direct for my bikes, but my friend is a Galfer "dude", so decided to give 'em a try.


I was laughing while pumping that damn lever, because we went to buy a bleeder (his was borrowed away, forever by a "friend"), and they didn't have the kind he's used. He bought one anyway.

Well, the bleeder stayed in the package, and here I am pumping away while he bleeds a little at a time. I told him while I was laughing, "I bet you have me doing this for a story to tell your buds at Desmo - "Yeah, I had my Sarge pumping away for an hour and a half. What a dork."" and now you're making me think I was right.:rotfl:

Anyway, yeah, we cleaned the rotors with cleaner, and I asked if the pads were the sintered. He said they were OEM replacement, so??

Yeah, I guess it's kinda a fluttering whizz sound, almost like nylon on nylon.
