With the cost of gas getting close to $3 for regular here in Oklahoma (I know its alot more in other places) I have been looking into options of a more economical way of getting around than my Nissan Titan. I frequently take 200 mile trips because thats how far it is round trip to get anywhere from Enid. Such as Tulsa, Wichita, Oklahoma City, and the airports there etc.

I bought the truck because I needed to tow and it can fit 2 motorcycles in the bed. (Plus it looks cool :eyebrows: ) I still need the truck but alot of the times I find myself taking long trips that I could have used something thats more economical.

Riding the bike long distances is not an alternative. Besides the comfort factor I usually need atleast a small trunk or extra seat.

I figured out that I spend anywhere between 3-4000 on gas a year. With my 13-14MPG average. That doesn't include gas for the bikes and boat which is easily several hundred more.

I played around with getting another car such as a VW, neon, civic etc. But with the cost of the vehicle plus insuring it the only way I even break even is if I buy the car for almost nothing. Or I buy it real cheap (less than $5000) and it gets over 40mpg.

I would love to get something like a motorcycle car hybrid like the T-Rex (with an A/C option) but those things are way overpriced. Europe has Smart Cars which are not really avaialbe in the US unless you want to pay (20,000). There are hydrogen conversions available for something like $50,000 plus the problem with finding a hydrogen station.

I just wish there was a better alternative. Its been bothering me for the last few days and I was wondering if anyone else was thinking about it. I feel screwed actually that when I got the truck gas was less than half the price that it is now. But I'm not sure the price of gas would have swayed my decision to get a truck because I still needed one. There really is no options avaible for a fuel efficient full size truck.

In such a short period of time gas prices have more than doubled with no real alternatives available. Give me an afforadable hydrogen vehicle with supporting hydrogen stations and I would jump on it yesterday. How about an electric full size truck that can do 500 miles in a day at highway speeds? :idunno:

Or atleast give me a little smart car with AC that can do highway speeds at a true 40mpg and costs less than $10,000. Because if you can make a high performance motorcycle for less than $10,000 they should be able to make a little POS fuel efficient car for that.

How often do you tow, how much, and how often do you put bikes in the back? I've seen a Subaru Outback tow two bikes on a small open trailer with the rear seating area and the entire trunk packed to the top. These guys did it on a regular basis. Some of those Subarus are rated to tow something like 3000lbs.

Put it this way I had a V6 F150 and it couldn't handle the load of towing the boat.
Now I'm thinking perhaps I should cut my losses, sell the boat and buy a trailer for the bikes. It would have to wait untill next spring because I would not try to sell a boat at the end of summer. I guess if I can't figure anything else out over the winter then thats what I will have to do. Thanks for the reply it gives me something to think about now.

Slap a RV overdrive unit on the truck? Underdrive pullies?

I am selling my F150 and replacing it with a trailer. I ordered up electric fans and a underdrive pully set for my expedition. I am going to slap on tires/wheels 1 inch taller with the idea that the torque is there so it should translate into better mileage. If the wheels/tires dont = better mileage then its at least pimpin.

If you want better mileage go to a smaller, lighter wheel and narrow, high-profile tires. Those steamroller dubs are tough on fuel mileage.
