Looking to get a new desktop computer. I'm wondering what's important to get nowadays. Mostly using it for home office stuff and maybe a game or two on occasion. Total system with 17" LCD monitor between $700 and $1200

I'm looking for suggestions and sometimes you guys seem to know about some out of the way online coupons.

What are the processors with 520- 560 HT technology? I see the speeds are faster but there seems to be more of a difference between them.

Yeah but if you select all of the options they have it comes out to a little more. Still close though. Very supprised they can sell those for that. Compared to what they did sell computers for. Mainly because the price of that new processor with an LCD monitor.

Not bad, right? It's not unusual for Dell, either.

The above system, with a 80GB drive, 1GB 533 RAM, and most importantly a 20.1" LCD comes out to $1228, or just slightly over budget. Having had that monitor, I can tell you it rocks. On the other hand, this system is serious overkill for basic computing needs.

It's been some time since built-from-scratch systems could compete with the deals that Dell (and presumably others) offers...

I could build it and beat their price by a few dollars. And not use any generic parts. But I wouldnt make much (if I was selling what I built), maby nothing. If I used the same quality parts they did I could make a little more of course. But they dropped their prices a couple years ago making it more difficult for guys like me because we dont make enough to provide 24/7 service and stuff. But anything I build would be better because it can be overclocked, plus those little perks of building one from scratch. Plus you dont even have to use their mold and give it what you need and cut the fat.

And, Yeah, those are an over kill. My 2.4ghz P4 w/HT is rarely used to its full abilities and its 1gig of ram that is not DDR2. But having is better than not having.
