Hey, I'm new. Got a yellow '98 900RR a couple months ago. It's got some minor cosmetic problems, so I figured if I dumped it I wouldn't be too crushed. Still haven't gone down on it yet though. :cool:

I just eBayed a Vance & Hines S4 and a jet/needle kit for dirt cheap. They're on my way to my door as we speak. Figured I'd throw on the pipe and see about opening up the airbox a little more with some better ducting. New plugs, wires, and an air filter, and go get it dyno tuned. Any suggestions on the air filter to run? I've got an open faced K&N on my Galaxie and it's worked great, but I guess not everyone has good results with them on bikes.

Any other suggestions for a little more acceleration from my 9dubbaR. I ride with Cornfedwhitey & his 954 always kicks my ass.

Hey, congrats on the bike. Sounds like you're getting down to the essentials. With a used bike, I wouldn't worry about too many contaminants going through a K&N, but invariably some will warn you away from them.

Check through specific mods and changes in the old pages of the Fireblade forum. You'll find a wealth of information there.

If you want to get extravagant, you can order an overseas "bore-kit" from the UK which will put you on an even-keel with the 954.

Hi,

Good to see another '98 owner. We seem to be a rare breed around here.

Bought mine about 2 years ago and it now has 82000 KLMs on it now with about 11000 KLMs of them mine.

I started to strip down all the plastics last weekend to carry out maintenance such as valve clearances, plugs, carby balance etc.

I find the '98 a very reliable bike and I am amazed with the way it sticks to the road. I have been bounced out of the seat on a corner but the wheels will not deviate from the line on the road.

Apart from oil, tyres and a chain ( stuffed when I bought it ) I have not had to replace any parts yet.

It would be good if '98 owners could have a maintenance register on this site because the injected blades have totally different problems that '98 and older bikes have.

I changed the oil & filter and was a little worried about how thick and dark it was when it came out.

Throttle-side fork seals were blown. Replaced those. Pretty easy job. But then slid the forks up through the triple a little less than an inch because the front felt so incredibly high since the forks were now holding pressure. :D Also adjusted the front and rear suspension to ride a bit stiffer than stock. Are the stock settings ridiculously soft, or is it just because of wear & tear? I'm only 165lbs, but the bike was awfully squishy. Now it's firmed up nicely.

The idle is a little rough (meaning it just doesn't purr perfectly smooth), but when I rejet the bike it will be dealt with. I've never had so many carbs on one vehicle before, so that'll be something new to learn. But adjusting and rebuilding carbs is nothing new. I fear EFI and electrical stuff way more than any carb setup.

Got a new rear tire because the old one was worn flat and got a nail in it. The front tire is dried and has some minor surface cracks. Seems to wash out a bit when I'm cornering. I'll get a new one soon enough.

That's it for any maintenance or repair work I've done. Seems to be solid and reliable. And it's yellow. Gotta love the yellow. I don't know if I'll end up keeping this bike forever like my '66 Galaxie and my girlfriend and just continually improve it, or if I'll move on to something else eventually. But I'm very happy with my purchase. Just wish I could keep that 954 within less than 3 car lengths from a 2nd gear 60mph punch. :rotfl:

there was talk the other day about the Vance&Hines pipes and the general consensus was that they suck big balls and make less power than stock and that D&D are actually a step above them. They coulda been better for the older blade such as yours but its up to you. God luck with it and hopefully getting the carbs jetted and synced will keep that cracker on the 54 a little closer to you. Is this your first bike?

It was my post, in regards to 66drop. :D

I think with less restriction the 25-30 shot he will be running will be more efficient than the restrictive stock pipe. :thumb:

I was thinking that but was too lazy to go check.

thats a pretty good shot there, doing some drag racing I assume

I also picked up a yellow 98 rr at the begining of this summer. Unfortunatly a front end loader pulled out in front of me on my way to work one morning, I couldn't avoid him. Luckily I was only doing about 50 when I hit him. Needles to say my bike doesn't look quite as nice as yours does. Neither do I for that matter. I just got an estimate from the bike shop the other day, they said its about 9000 in damage. (more than 2x what I paid for it!) Oh yeah, I broke my back also and spent a month in bed. But I am coming around now. I have been pulling my bike apart alittle every day. Bought some used parts off of ebay. She will look as good as new in no time at all.(I hope)

Damn, I hope you do better and have some better luck in the future! It's a fun bike though, huh? :cool:


Anyone have suggestions on mods, or even what air filter to run?

Yeah I love the bike. All of my family and some of my friends want me to get rid of it. I could never do that. Too much fun! It is going to look and run better by next sping too.(the axcident is just an excuse for me to modify it) Hope you have better luck than me.

In regards to Vance & Hines sucking balls...

So very wrong. Put the new pipe on tonight and did some testing. Didn't have a dyno handy, so I can't give hard numbers. But 6th gear freeway roll-ons from 80 to 120mph are much smoother and quicker.

But the most telling of all was running the 900 against my friend's 954. We ran them a couple times, from like 50mph. He gave me the go, so I got a bike length or so, and by 130 or so (I was watching my tach and the cars ahead, not the speedo) he'd have crept to my rear wheel. So he's still faster, but not as much as before when he'd breeze by in 2nd and then slowly keep pulling away afterwards.

"Slip-ons don't really make any difference, they just sound better." I say that's mish-mash. Of course you'd have to have seen the stock pipe that I pulled off. That thing had some shitty baffling. I could build a better pipe using an Erector set and some duct tape. My V&H is just straight through. Sounds just like my bike did when I ran it in the garage without any muffling at all, just quieter and doesn't make my brain itch when I pin the throttle. Good deep, crisp tone, but not harsh. A nice burble-burble that sounds pretty mean when I open it up. Sounds better than that sound clip on their site. Less raspy. I was told it sounded better than my friend Jeff's Jardine'd '03 600RR, being that his is so screamingly high pitched and harsh.
