Hey guys, I just got back into the bike scene after 10 years away. I got a sweet deal on an 00 929 with 2032 km on it. Since the last bike I owned was carbureted, I've got a question about the EFI on this thing. The bike is dead stock except for a Bolt-on Yoshimura titanium pipe that I put on it(another sweet deal from a guy at work), and the idle seems a little lumpy. The guys at Honda told me I needed a PC to smooth things out, but I'm wondering if it might also be a sign that plugs are fouled, etc... Any Ideas? Great site, by the way. I've been on here for a little while, this is just my first post.

No, plugs are not fouled. I can't believe I'm going to say this but...The Honda guy is right. Get a Dyno Jet Power Commander (PCIIIr) and have it dyno tuned by an authorized Dyno Jet tuner. You won't believe the difference.

Almost forgot, don't buy a K&N air filter if you are looking for horse power. That is all.

Oh, and get some frame sliders. It can save you BIG bucks. They only cost about $40.00 or $50.00. Maybe less.

The PCIII should be sufficient. The PCIIIr allows for ignition timing adjustments in addition to air:fuel ratio adjustments, something you probably don't need unless you're planning on doing major engine work in the future...ports, cams, etc.

You guys and Honda are telling Jason to purchase a PCIII and get it custom mapped because his idling is a little lumpy? :huh: Not quite following you there. Although an Ohlins shock would really smooth it out (just kidding guys :D ) I'd say start a little cheaper by maybe checking the plugs, replacing the air filter, and check the Starter Valve Synch. Everyone that's done the Starter Valve Synch comments on the smoothness of the idle afterwards. PCIII? No, not for a lumpy idle. :idunno:

Edit: BTW Jason, is your bike idling somewhere between 1100 to 1300 RPM after warming up?

what rpm is your bike idling at ? It could be way too low and that could be the cause, make sure it up @ 1200... then start goin through superdave's suggested check list.

Welcome to the org. (I think nedro,galtoo and the guy from honda own stock in Dynojet :D

Yes, he can check all that without spending money, but I think he'll eventually need a pcIII, since he does have a slip-on, to make it run smoother. It may not be necessary, but it will definitely run smoother.

I put on my 3/4 Devil system and ran it for a 6 months without a PCIII. Nothing wrong with the idling or running it hard. The only problem was the initial 3500RPM surge and on/off throttle response. The 929 idled perfectly with the aftermarket exhaust and no PCIII. Don't get me wrong, the PCIII does a good job, I just don't think we should steer him that way to solve that problem with his idling question (although I've been wrong before :D ). When it comes time to upgrade to the PCIII it'll be a great investment, I'm just not sure it's for this small problem.

Thanks for all the info guys. The bike was idling at about 1000rpm, so I turned up the idle to 1200. It's still a bit lumpy though. I do plan to spend all kinds of money making it faster, better looking, invisible, etc... but before I do that I wanted to make sure everything works the way it's supposed to. The PCIII was the next item on the list anyway. A question about Yoshimura, I've seen various people on the forums here smack talking these pipes. Is it just a personal preference thing, or did my buddy put one over on me by selling me this pipe? How about aftermarket air filters, yes, no?

It seems as though different bikes stick with different exhaust. The Hondas here typically go with Hindle, Devil, Arata, etc. Not to many have a Yosh. Where as the Suzuki's seem to use nothing but the Yosh. :idunno:

Do a search on filters, consensus is stay with stock, no gains with K&N and others.

Yea, 1000RPM was a little low.

Most people experience better power with the stock filter. Look in the KB:Fireblades forum, there is a thread where they test a 929 on the dyno with different filters.

Sounds to me like everyone has their own interpretation of "lumpy" hence the many suggestions.

Maybe if it can be explained with more detail by Jason we'll all have a clearer understanding of what the bike is doing. :huh:

Makes the most sense. Then get the PC. LOL. Seriously. Mine came with the PC and it runs great. So I don't know what it was like before and after.

Im my experiences with the 929 and aftermarket parts, the Yoshi on any CBR is going to create a little lumpy Idle, but it just sounds lumpy, it isn't really lumpy. If you were to buy a full system, (Micron, Hindle, Erion, or Devil), you will experience that they are very different than the Yoshi, as far as sounds, idle, and performance. I went with the Erion, because it wasn't too loud and was real smooth. However, if you get anyone of those, take the flapper out of the airbox, but leaving the stock filter, (do not use an aftermarket air filter), and set you new PC3 with a free map from www.powercommander.com, your bike will run great. Or, I if you went with the Full Erion system, I might be able to send you my custom map, that would take your HP up about 18 over stock. With that setup, you shoud be running at about 138-142 hp, and very smoothly.

Oh, guess I didn't read closely enough. Yeah, not exactly sure about the lumpy idle thing. What the PCIII WILL do is smooth out the abrupt on/off feel of the throttle that seems inherent with Honda's FI.
