Ok is this the only site (well except the sex sites, white sites, paedophile sites) where no one gives a F*&^ about the troubles in Bahrain, Libya and Japan. Im so confused, Ive always strived to show that someone who rides a bike isnt stereotypical, ie thick, insular, druggy, idiot, narrow minded, thuggish and a general twat.

I just cant fathom why not even one person hasnt broached the topic over the last few days. It is peculiar to this bike site Im on others and they all are having heated threads dedicated to the topic.

I know there are intelligent (or people with degrees anyway) on here, does your brains turn off when you log on here?

a page one.two.three of our recently posted posts

basically they show no interest outside bikes :(
Hi Setanta :),

I think lots of us have been following since Tunisia. Remember the Riots in the Middle East thread? I'm not willing to get my head ripped off because I'm "too liberal" WRT human rights.
I come here to take a break from the horrible or scary things in the world.

I also noticed since the tension has escalated, there's been less activity here, people may be spending a wee bit more time watching the news and worrying than we give them credit for.

And for a stereotype smash, the most politically active group of people in my world are not the stereotype people with degrees. In my little world the heavy rock bands and their followers are singing about and discussing all these issues most. And currently!
Remember the Armenian Genocide? One of my favourite bands is still fighting to get that recognized by the world. (System of a Down) There's thousands of people in their culture that are still buried in the sand somewhere and nobody give a sh%$t - very depressing! They have a huge Turkish following because the younger crowd can see that denying history is stupid. All the metal heads I know follow that issue and the current issues closely. Even the heavy rock or metal stations have info on their websites and donation buttons. The stereotype of those people is not close to reality either.

How about the band that plays all over the place with a nice mix of Jewish and Palestinian members? The Muslim band from Baghdad that sings lyrics in five languages including Hebrew?

So I wouldn't worry about stereotypes of bikers. There's a mix here and lots of us are following things on the news & twitter etc. And like the bands and people above, the ones with degrees and without them can still be passionate about the state of the world - you're not alone here.

I think the whole site has been quiet for a while

Good to hear from you again though.Too bad it's in a less than happy thread. :(

Forgot to mention something I'd noticed and didn't find addressed on other sites: The lack of hooligans looting and taking advantage of people in Japan and even Christchurch NZ.

Those people have an awful lot to be proud of. Sometimes I start to feel that if someone trips, the first one on the scene is not there to help them up but more to steal their wallet. :crap:

It was good for the heart to see how people pull together sometimes. Same for the middle east, the behavior of your average man on the street gives me hope.

I don't watch TV and only remember to check the news online maybe a couple of times a week so I'm often late catching the latest news.
Regardless though, I don't see anything to be gained by discussing such things anyway.

Usually people on motorcycle forums come to talk about motorcycles and not how f*cked the world is, maybe they come here as a place to not have to talk about what is in the news every 10 seconds.....I clearly understand your point, but it is like looking for a good steak at a clam bar. Besides I feel like every political conversation on this site ends up being how the US is destroying the world, so why bother, I really only want to talk about motorcycles when I am on this site.

More serious stuff I keep for other forums I am on and where I 'know' the other posters for a long time and can argue with them without causing offence. I really come here to read bits about bikes and look around the off topic section for a break.

There were threads on the Aussie floods, and the Japanese Tsunami.

If we talk about fish tanks on here, there's no reason why current affairs can't be brought up.

Personally, I don't watch the news much - too much doom and gloom in the world, I'm good enough at depressing myself without watching all of that as well!

You need a fish tank maybe? A kitten to join you in your travels? You can't be sad with a kitten.

Ha ha, thanks for the kitten! I'm more of a dog person, but there is a nice little cat next door - he (she?) sits in the window watching everything that goes on.

I have to agree with DD on this one. I take in as much as I need to know with whats going on without the heated debates and opinions (right or wrong) that happen when you start about religion and politics. ;)
