Cleaning out the kitchen cabs today....recognized any of this?

Well here are few comments from snowbound England. We had about two inches this afternoon. The whole country has ground to a halt. Pathetic. People just don't know how to drive. Having said that I did have a couple of moments riding home on my Hornet. :eek: Very cold tonight, I'm guessing -5 C or something. Switchgear on my bike froze. I'm too lazy to put the bike away at night so it's just covered in ice. Snow will all be gone by tomorrow afternoon which upsets my kids because they very rarely get a chance to play in the stuff.

Now let's move on to the Red Cross food parcel that you have been sent. (Having visited supermarkets in the States I can understand why someone feels the need to send it to you)

Firstly Vegemite is an Australian product, a vastly inferior copy of the wonderful Marmite, and should be consigned to the bin. Yeast extract. Marmite is good stuff on toast, as is Bovril, a beef exract (liquid cow I guess). What they make it from does not bear too close examination. BTW our Bovril labels are red as per the small jar with yellow label. Never seen the big bottle type before. Nice hot drink would be a teasponn of Bovril in a mug of hot water, Beef Tea I think the navy call it. UK housholds divide into two camps, Bovril or Marmite. The fact that my childhood home was a Bovril home may explain a lot considering the problems of BSE. Who can say?

Don't see any OXO cubes there. Dry version of Bovril, pretty well. also makes a good drink.

The Heinz (can we say next First Lady here :) ) Salad Cream is a Brit take on Mayonaise. Extra sugar, extra processing, extra anything unnatural and a personal favourite of mine. Heinz wanted to withdraw it from the market a year or so back. A huge outcry made them back off.

Bird's Custard powder. Fantastic stuff. Another favourite. I believe the French call it Creme Anglaise. We are so afflunt here in the UK now that most people buy custard ready to serve, microwaveable. Just not the same. A few years back I used to work very close to the original factory in Birmingham where they made Bird's Custard powder. A beautiful ornate Victorian building. Now it's turned into small industrial units and looks very sad.

Mushy Peas. A warning to you all. Never, I repeat, never eat mushy peas. They are very nasty. The dye them green to make them look like vegetables but they are in fact made from papier mache. They will kill you.

As for the Herring Roes. another one to be avoided although difficult if you find yourself in Sweden.

Looks like Crab Paste at the front. Always preferred Prince's myself. Accept no substitute. I see the sardines, never popular in this house, but my father was a big consumer of canned Pilchards in tomato sauce. truly, truly disgusting. The smell, the look, the tase. Eaarrrrrrrgggggggh. :puke:

Soon be time for bed.ight make myself a cup of Horlicks, or Bournevita, or Ovaltine, or Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate. Yummy.


BTW Tell Tigerblade he is right. But keep it to yourselves. OK? :whisper:

Actually most of these items are regular staples in our larder, as the majority are easily obtained here. I left out quite a few items....Oxo cubes being one of them....LOL
And I rarely bring my Cadbury's out of hiding while the wife is looking....

I have Pommie relatives, hence the Vegemite. Anyway, I only stuck it in the picture to stoke the Vegemite/Marmite fires from this THREAD. You should know by now, that I do precious little without malice.... ;)

We have an equally arcane collection of Indian, Trinidadian, and Czech items....it's a madhouse trying to find anything....and stinks to high heaven when something goes off...


BTW, you missed the mini-wellies in the background....brilliant utensil holder... :)

Last time I ate in England, I had to get some Setler's Wind-Eze. "Express relief from the pain of trapped wind"

BTW, it was the best tasting thing on the menu....



Other than the beer !
