Hi,

My girlfriend recently acquired a new '02 954 and we have a couple of questions.....

- Is there a recommended brand of frame sliders? Any preferences for delrin vs. aluminum?

- The bike seems to run quite hot (though it was in the high 80s over the weekend). The bike got up to about 223 degrees and the frame spars were too hot to touch (and warm for hours afterwards). Under these conditions, shouldn't the fan run for awhile after the bike is shut down?

- I seem to remember reading something about switching to a narrower tire when the stock one is done, is this recommended?

223 is normal. once you turn the bike off, the fan will go off. everything there is normal.

go to a 180 after the 190. it makes the bike turn in faster.

- Intuitive is a trusted, respected, and proven brand; definitely NOT a metal slider; Delrin, nylon etc are good

- 223 is ballpark for max heat before the fans kick in (normal on a hot day when you're stuck in traffic); best to check the fuse anyways, just in case

- generally speaking, NO; some people, track junkies, prefer the thinner tire (allegedly faster turn-in); the majority prefers the already quick turn-in, and slightly larger contact patch of the stock tire size

Wow! High '80's - that would make anyone sweat .

Sorry, I live in hell and am used to it, so 'high '80's makes me laugh'. Anyway, welcome to the .org and we hope you stay around for awhile. I have the Intuitive sliders, have thankfully never used them, but from what I've read here on the forum they are tops. You definitely don't want metal units.

stegen : yeah, we need pics of the girlfriend. Dont expect anymore help till then.

We are done with you until you post pics of the woman!

Living in the desert like bacchus, that temp is normal when sitting but not riding. I may get up to about 190 when riding hard but other than that about 185.
Unless you are an accomplished rider, stick with stock tire.

Post the pics and these guys will depart more wisdom upon your fresh cranium

As others have said, Intuitive frame sliders are the way to go. Just be sure to check the directions closely..there is definitely a left and a right, and one bolt is longer. Putting the longer bolt in the wrong side will result in damage.

I'd stick with a 190 tire, personally. It seems like the folks who switch to 180 are racers. I do a lot of trackdays (not racing) with the 190 and it turns in just fine, quicker than any other bike I've owned!

Ditto on the Intuitive sliders. They saved me from major damage. Stick with the 190 unless you want to quicken the steering (although the 190's usually cost more). As for the temps, totally normal...

Colin   to the .org!  I have the Intuitive sliders on mine and as with Bacchus I have not had to use them(knock on wood).  I also live in hell with Bacchus and can tell you that your bike is just fine in the running temp department.  There have been days here when it's 104 out and mine gets to 225-227, but that's only when I come to a stop. My fan will kick on at 211 and unlike some other bikes only works while the ignition is on.  As far as the tire, I have not got to the point where I need a new yet but I seem to like the 190, I may try the 180, cause I have heard the same as you.  I guess one never knows till they try themselves so that's what I will do.

I ran I 190 supercorsa, it was fine, I then ran 180 207/8 Dunlop GPs and liked them. I now run Doablo Corsas in 180 and they are great.
The Computrack guy told me the 180 is definately the reccomended way to go.

I use Intuitive sliders too...crash tested 'em also. The did their job and saved my plastic.

I say try the different tire sizes and find one you like. It's a personal preference selection so whatever feels best to you is what you should use.

Yup, the bike and the frame get hot, not unusual. I've had it get that hot here even during cooler temps. If you wearing leather or riding pants (not jeans) the heat is barely noticeable.

It's a great bike. I hope you both enjoy it!

Some other food for thought regarding tire size: The 190 has a 50mm side wall. Unless the choices have changed, I think the 180 has a 55mm sidewall. I don't think it's available in a 180/50. This is potentially a problem if you change gearing in a manner that shortens the wheel base, as it's possible for the taller tire to then rub the front of the swingarm. If you're keeping stock gearing, the 180/55 tire is not a problem. I just remember some folks mentioning this awhile back.

I am using the Vortex frame sliders and have not had to crash test them yet (knock on wood). I also run the 190 size tires and the turn-in is quick enough for me. I just spooned on a set of Diablos and they turn in nice and smooth compared to the Dunies (D208ZRs). The Dunies tend to fall into a turn.

I thought it was like this: the 55 in 180/55 is the ratio of height, which means its 55% of the height of its width, so a 180/55 is fundamentally 180*.55 = 99mm height...

same with the 190/50, its sidewall is 190*.50= 95mm tall.

But, those are just nominal figures. The actual widths very from one manufacturer to another so therefore so do the heights... Its pretty damn confusing!

Oh, is that how that's figured out and that's what that number means? Oh well, the bottom line is that the 180/55 tire is taller (greater diameter) than the 190/50 tire. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

It is very easy to check if the tire diameter is going to be a problem. If you can't fit an entire finger between the tire and the swingarm face, then tire growth may potentially become an issue.
