A guy I know hit a bird the other day, *cracK*, square in the rad of his sv650. I had heard that if 20% of the rad fins were bent, it needed to be replaced (ok, so that source was with regards to a car...) Does the same rule of thumb apply to bikes?

How much damage to the rad is too much?

Is it just the fins, or the water tubes? WHen somethinglike that happens, its usualy just the first layer of fins bent over, just bend them back, or rip them out with needle nose pliers. as long as its getting air flow, loss of a few fins wont hurt much.

If it's just the first layer of fins you should be able to straighten them. Go to an auto body supplier, they sell little combs to straighten four or five rows at a time. Or make one out of a peice of plastic.

the simple[?] answer to whether it is _too much damage_
would be to montor the coolant temps and find out...
