I was just flipping through July's issue of Sport Rider magazine today at lunch reading the Liter Bike Comparison. Something that I've noticed for a while now and wondered about is; why do all the other manufacturers have obvious Ram Air Inlets in their front Fairings except Honda? Honda has used them on their 600's for a long while now and the 07 600 RR may be the most focused design of Ram Air Inlet on the 600 yet. The RC51 (RIP) had one (very similar to the current 600RR) so obviously Honda sees some benefit, but not on the Fireblades.

Does Honda feel our Fireblades make enough power without the Ram Air effect? :idunno:

The 1000RR does have "ram air".
Huh? I must have missed it. Where are the intake ducts?

I would guess it is much like on my 954, where the air travels under the bottom edge of the Fairing and into duct tracts leading into the airbox (of course, not owning one of the 1K's; I could be completely wrong on this). I'm saying all the other bikes in the class have VERY obvious inlets built into the Fairings. The Honda (if it truley has ram air) does not have inlets obviously placed like the others. I'm wondering why?

So, can ya describe the Honda version of Ram air on the current 1K?

Thats where it is... Im pretty sure the new 1KRR will have it in the nose like the new 600RR or the other liter bikes.. I think its more effective in that location.. :twocents:

Ah hah; thanks Maholli. Any thoughts on why Honda has never used intake ducts on the Fireblades like everyone else?

I was kind of wondering the same thing... They have always hide it in the nose... Same with the 600RR i think, until of course the 2007 600RR.. Seems like the best location for the ram air ducts would be where its located on the 07 600RR, which im pretty sure was kind of like the RC-51's..

The '04/'05 1000RR has the same intake the F3 did. between the forks and above the radiator. The small ducts under the headlights that appear to be something are really nothing but holes. Honda calls it ram air induction, but it really doesn't pressurize the airbox, so it is more correctly called direct cold air induction.

It is also where the flapper for the 1000RR resides.
The '06/'07 has the same duct.

There are tons of photos and info on it around the web.

The 600RR had the ducts on the upper area of the side fairings for '03/'04. In '05 they moved the ducts up under the headlights where the fakies on the first 1000RR are, but still use ducts that direct the air around through the holes on either side of the front portion of the frame and into the airbox, just like the '03/'04. Similar to the 929/954 in ducting (although the 929/954 don't penetrate the frame), but with openings on the leading edge of the fairing to gather the air.
Yes, the '07 600RR uses the same direct intake pioneered on the RC51. Goes from the leading edge of the nose through a straight duct directly through holes in the headstock of the frame and into the airbox. Not really a more direct way of doing things.


Oh yeah - and Baba-san was quoted as stating he didn't feel that the 900/929/954 needed ram air, which is why they never implemented it on his bikes.

would it beneficial to remove the little plastic intake covers on the 954 to allow the intake to breath better? i was thinking about just getting some wire mesh or pantyhose and cover the openings or leave them as shown in the pic. :idunno:

well i took off those restrictive covers and it feels like its pulling a little better so i'm gonna leave em off for now. I may also just cut a big hole outta the sides on stock covers since it does look good with them on..
