i spoke about this before but, i was never specific enough to generate a clear, concise answer from anyone. a recap: about three weeks ago, driving down the highway, my red light came on & the FI came on at the same time. At the very same time, my speedometer stopped working. but, the bike ran great and i continued home withut issue. after turning the bike off, and then restarting it, the red light was no longer on, nor did the FI light appear on any more. a few days later, i went over 5500rpm, and again, the red light and FI light appeared on until i turned off the bike and restarted it again. now, 3 weeks later, i just got back today from a 1600km trip around the island without any issues. it's like the movie Ground hogs day: i can drive for days on end, and if i never exceed 5500rpm, the red light and FI light won't come on. but once i exceed the 5500rpm, they both come on until i turn the bike off.

now, a few updates, my speedometer never did work after that first day when all this happened, could the speedometer be effected by the Servo motor in some way?

my bike is a 2002 954 with over km60,000 on it. it runs and starts like its a brand new bike. i drove it today for 4 hours from the other end of the island back home at 140km to 190km nearly the whole way, no issues.

thanks for any info, Frank

It could be that you have two seperate issues, personally i would first check that the exhaust valves moves freely, it could be just starting to stick and this would be a good time to sort it, if it is sticking they say you cant put anything on it, but recon a touch of copperslip (the real thing ) carnt hurt. If it is sticking whip the servo off and check for damage(the servo will sometimes make a whinning noise when you turn onthe ignition which might imply out of alignment or on way out. As for speedo take it off strip it down look for anthing not right, also check conections all the way through....

if you're lucky its not a stripped servo! I suspect the speedo and MIL light are unrealted faults though. The 5,500 limits suggested teh exhaust value or servo as its at this point the 2nd stage opens up in the exhaught valve (5,000 I thought but not splitting hairs as techs are not always accurate!). hth

3000RPM and 8000RPM are when the servo comes on.

Are you running a PC? Maybe there's a fueling problem at that point and the fueling is so far off it's causing problems with the injectors or a sensor.
Don't know about the speedo and definately not if it only plays up at a specific RPM. When you say 5500RPM you mean in any gear right, not just one gear?

Right just to clarifie, when riding the bike the red light will come on and stay on when you go over 5000 revs, when in neutral with side stand down the light will flash below 5000 revs. hope that helps, find out how many times it flashes and i can tell you what that fault code means ok...:thumb:

RICK-ITFc: Ok thanks. i will take it over 5500 tomorrow to get the red light to come on, and then i will put it in nuetral with the side stand down to see if i can get an error code.

Bladeracer: No, i have no pc, and yes, the light comes on (I think) when it reaches 5500 rpm's in any gear, although i will double check this tomorrow becuase, i've only noticed it coming on in 6th gear everytime i hit 5500rpm. well, that's two things to check tomorrow: 1.) error code on side stand, 2.) i will take it past 5500rpm in 2nd or 3rd to see what happens, to see if it will happen in any gear?

oh, and the speedometer hasn't worked ever since the first time--3 weeks ago--when all this happened at the same time: red light/FI light came on, and speedometer stopped working at the very same second, all together.

It hasn't bothered me much yet becuase, like i said, the bike runs fantastic. it's my daily commuter and i put around 600km a week on her, and she starts everytime with just a touch of the button. fingers crossed!!

did you ever find out what was wrong? i have the same issue on my 01 929rr. everytime i go over 5k rpm the FI and red light goes on. my speedo has been very intermittent off and on since. when i shut off the engine and restart, the light goes off. other than that it rides perfect.

yeah i got the problem fixed. i took it to my mechanic and he both, re-lubed the servo motor--he took it apart and re-greased the cogs (i wasn't there so i don't even know what he re-greased) and he fixed the speedometer as well. that fixed the problem and the red light and FI light no longer come on. the question now is what fixed the red light and FI light? was it the re-greasing of the cogs in the servo motor or the fixing of the speedometer?? I have no idea! I'm just happy that it works again.

Cleaning the HTEV is more important than greasing the servo motor gearbox.
The HTEV jamming up is what kills the servo motor.
