I'm shopping for a new helmet and just want to know why some helmets have removable cheek pads & liners? Is it so you can swap them for thicker/thinner ones for a better fit? Or is it so you can remove them for washing? If so, how do you wash them?

Both reasons.

I hand wash my liner & cheekpads in the sink with water/shampoo then let them air dry.
On a slightly different topic: I was told that you should clean helmets (without removable liners) by pouring water with a bit of shampoo into the helmet, sloshing it about, rinsing a few times with clean water and then letting air dry. This cleaned the helmet alright, but at the cost of making the lining sag afterwards (basically ruining the lining). Anyone got any better ideas?

you could try pressing on the liner to try to squeeze any excess water out.

shampoo I gotta try that next time. I usually just use a little laundry detergent.
