My 954 has a full akrapoviac exhaust, flapper mod, k&n, and a PC III with custom map, FWIW.

I just rode a stock 05 R1. Here's my impression vs my 954:

The R1 engine just feels like a slug at all RPM's. The R1 has absolutely no snap to it and absolutely no power below 5 grand. Now before you blow off my opinion as just being biased, keep reading. The R1 is basically a top end machine. It builds power and torque at a smooth linear pace with very predictable power right up to redline. It will not stand up on you in any gear like my 954 will. WOT from a dig in 1st the front tire stays put. I would not win against one from a dig, as my bike can not stay down in 1st and 2nd at even close to wide open. WOT through corners is not a problem with the R1. High speed straight line acceleration is amazing. Where our bikes start to fall off and lose power at high speeds, the R1 continues its predicatble linear power curve and maintains its strong acceleration even on its very top end of the gearing. A downside to this power , though, is the only way to really gauge how fast its accelerating is by watching the speedo, because the bike never "feels" fast.

As far as handling, the bike is a little wider and heavier than the 954, but if you muscle it over, it turns just as hard as the 954. The main problem with the bike is going from one direction to the other. For example going from a hard left turn directly into a hard right turn, the bike is very slow to stand up out of a deep cornering situation. I had to hang off the thing hard to get it to come up and over into the other direction. With the 954, this never happens.

Overall, the bike seems like it would only be advantageous on the autobahn compared to a 954. It was decently confortable, but the way the engine power is setup, its just not for any type of quick turning or acceleration activities. I do have to say, it made me appreciate my 954.

I have a 954 with an Akro can, K & N and PCIII and overall i'm very happy with it. I'm considering a full system, flapper mod etc over the winter as i'm loosing out to some more 'modern bikes' on track days (including my friends 05 R1) and i like tinkering too. I was wondering if you considered any other full systems as HRC supply the Arrow in their racing kit for the 954.

Cheers

I do have to say the flapper mod gives it some more midrange snap to it. I actually had to pull some of my midrange fuel out with the PC because it started running on the rich side as I rolled into the throttle. And no, I didnt really consider any other systems, simply because I like the look, sound, and performance that I get out of the system, and for riding on the street, the bike is actually very quiet. I'm definately into making power without being obnoxiuos on the noise level. My friend has just the slip on like you have on the stock system, and his bike is actually louder and raspier sounding than mine. I would have thought the opposite, so I am very pleased with it to say the least.

Thanks for that, very informative. I too dont like too much noise for street riding, but like a bit of growl when opening up in the country. Did you leave all the servo stuff on or completely strip it out? Am i right in say that the angle of the can on the full system is different to the bolt on, i.e at a higher angle?

Hard to tell, but I think its pretty close. My buddys 02 with the akro slip on doesnt look to be much different than mine.....

And I just have the flap under the inlet tubes, servo is still there.

In response to R15SUK in considering other systems, I have an Arata Full titanium system, Sounds awesome, loud at full noise, but hey, hard to get power without the noise, on my 03 954 I get 145 RWHP. The workmanship on the Arata is the best I have seen.
here is a somewhat average photo

yea when I rode my Bro's 06 R1 Compared to My 954, It fell very sluggish below 5k, but after that and upwards to redline(yes redline on a bike with a shiftlight is nice) it is a monster. I love how 1-4 are just crammed together like how ferrari's speedometer starts at 20mph. lol I guess Yamaha isnt proud of the first few thousands rpms huh? anyway still a nice bike, but threw my rythym off nots as smooth as the 954, but thats why I drive a 954 ....

Thanks both for posting the info on the Arata. I have heard that they are very good systems, another for me to consider. Have either of you done the flapper mod to the airbox in conjunction with the system?

Zeeman, do you have pics of the polished exhaust?

I have done the flapper mod (tucked it down).

My highly calibrated seat-of-pants-Dyno can't really feel much difference, adds a little more growl to the induction which is good.

Polished huh...I spend more time cleaning than I like to already, would be good to see a pic tho
