Does anybody know the process it takes to tighten my steering head bearings, can this be done or do i have to replace them if so how do i do that?

Remove upper triple, removed lock nut and washer, tighten nut... with a bunch of other steps inbetween.
It can be done. Why do you want to do it?

i heard you can do this instead of having to replace the bearings, im just doin a quick fix for now while i have all my fairings off, its loose at the steering head and i know the top bolt is tight enough. anybody have a more detail description or is that just it.

Hi NumBrEleVeN,

There's no quick fix if your steering head bearing are shot - no amount of tightening will fix a bearing that is severly worn or about to collapse - so be careful !!

If however your steering head bearings just need a little adjustment (which is pretty normal after a road bike has done a few miles) then there's no need to take the top triple clamp off...

Back off the big nut on the top of the triple clamp, grab the adjuster from your toolkit for the rear suspension spring pre-load (big C-spanner/wrench) and hook it into the stepped nut under the top triple clamp.

Nip that nut up FIRM - no more...definately not tight as you wont be able to steer the bike properly otherwise.

Swing the steering from side to side to check the tension - if you're happy, tighten the top nut up again (this one can be done up real tight) and then check the tension or stiffness of the steering once again to see if the top nut has affected anything.

If it all feels OK, then you're good to go...

I know that there are specific troque settings for steering head bearings, but it seems like a lot of mucking around to go to removing top triple clamps etc for a 30 second job...I've used the above method for over 30 years of riding without any trouble - just so long as you're careful about how much tension you put on the bearing with the stepped nut you can't go too far wrong...

spanky really apprecitate the reply that would save alot of time, one mor problem though is i dont have the c spanner wrench with the tool kit is there something else i can use or do i have to borrow one from a friend

OK, now you're really asking me the rough and ready type questions....

Yes, if push comes to shove, you can use a hammer and punch/drift to GENTLELY tap the stepped nut around - probably about 1mm at a time - NO MORE, as you really have very little feel for how tight you're making it...

I hasten to add that I do not recommend this method for anything other than a get-out-of-jail situation...it'd be a heap better if you could borrow a C-Spanner or go buy one, they're a very simple tool and probably only worth a few bucks.

How loose is too lose for the steering? Mine feels pretty light and I get quite a bit of headshake while exiting corners with throttle. Sometimes even when going straight when hard on the throttle. I'm going to try and adjust my riding so I put more weight on the front end, but I was just wondering.

You won't know unless you can jack the bike up and feel for notchiness or looseness. Either way can cause headshakes.

My blade only has 9000 kms so I'm thinking they aren't worn, but you never know. Maybe a steering damper will help.
