After my suspension mods my only gripe was that the bike still picked up small bumps. I got my suspension guy to measure the stiction and it was 20mm. :sless: He said that while it wasn't brilliant he'd seen worse and the way to fix it is to get the fork seal housing bored out slightly. I haven't heard this elsewhere and am a bit sceptical.

I've read that even 15mm stiction is unacceptable so last night I thought I'd see if the fork alignment procedure talked about by "the sages" would help.
I don't have a front stand of any sort so I just used the Dan Kyle "loosen pinch bolts and axle nut and squish up and down method". I've since measured the stiction at 9mm (twice) and the bike feels quite a lot less harsh at low speeds on bumpy suburban roads so that is an improvement. Thanks guys. What level of stiction should be the objective and is 0mm achievable?

Many people have talked about the anti stiction polishing that some suspension specialists do - eg DK. What exactly gets polished? My fork tubes themselves are almost mirror finish so I can't imagine they would contribute much stiction. Or at 9mm am I just about there? :idunno:

Nine mm isn't bad, especially for the OEM forks. My Ohlins were around 3 mm, but they have the TI-Nitride coating so that isn't unusual. Even though your forks look like mirror finish, under close inspection with a cyclinder hone microscope they look like the surface of the moon. The tubes are rotated with ultra fine grit cloth moved up and down in a diagonal motion to polish the surface. I have even seen them polished out with Pearl Drops toothpaste once they have been polished out with 1500 grit cloth.

Please note, the forks need to be disassembled to polish the entire tube, as I have seen at least one person attempt to polish just the exposed tube thinking that was all that was required.

Thanks for that Abtech. I think I can live with 9mm of stiction for now. I guess it may improve as the forks "self polish". They currently have 22000 klm on them.
From your post it sounds as if all that gets polished in the anti stiction treatment is the tubes themselves.
