Hey ladies and gents, ive used the search button but havent found a specific 929 vs 954 thread about people with good exp on each ... and here lies my problem.

I race a HRC/Sato equipped 1000RR, and use my 929RR as a second track bike for smaller tuning events, and stunting (please dont cringe, im no shithead with a degraded and trashed 929), but have always LOVED the look of the 954, and always wanted one.

Now here is the thing, i have the option to buy one really cheap right now from a dealer (sponsor) and i shouldnt let it pass me by.

While the 1000RR is a big hp track bike, the 929 does what i ask of it , and does it so damn well. Its such a lovely lovely bike. I have it setup the way i like it, plus i have aset of Zaks (top brand in aus) fairings here that i run on it , plus other spares i can carry forward onto the 954 if need be, but i feel shitty and my mind isnt made up.

What im saying is id love to own a 954, but i love my 929. Can anyone who does some street riding , track time and some stunts on either chime in and say "hey the 929 is ......" etc etc ?.

The 954 certainly did feel more "new" and threw me forward like the RC51 does where you ride in a attack position more, but .... hmmm.

Like i said im feeling shitty cause i want a 954, but love my 929RR a lot, so my q is ..... IS IT WORTH doing the upgrade ?.

At the end of the day, ill be able to get a full Sato system, swap a few parts over, use my spare wheels, and fit a handbrake and air shifter and break even on the 929.

Thoughts ?

My, my, my...that is one of the sweetest looking 929's I have seen. Kudos saf, you did a nice job on the ride. The 954 would have to be one nice piece to consider letting your 929 go for it...MAN that is nice! :nworthy3:

:plus1: However; if you picked up the 954, you would have the last three generations of the Fireblade which would be way cool. Also, I would love to see what you could do with a 954 after seeing your work on the 929.

I race the 929 here in Perth :)
I prefer the 929 ergonomically but I agree the 954 has some nicer aesthetic touches.
My preference would be to bore the 929 to 954 (and maybe do some other work while you're in there). You'd get at least the same hp as the 954 and keep your already well setup and familiar chassis as well as knowing you have a good strong new engine. If you want the aesthetics of the 954 you could also do the swingarm swap and fit the tank but that requires some work to the rear subframe as well.
I can't stay with CBR1000's in a straight line but the 929 doesn't lack in the brakes and corners and mine's stock other than brake lines, muffler and PC2.

hahhaha , i like the keep all 3 part :)

But i cant afford that :( .

Thanks for them kind words guys (now you just made it harder to do haha), and yes its a really special bike. When i bought that bike it was very average and not cared for as much as it could. The owner is a top guy but just didnt ... care so much. I stripped it, cleaned it till there was no dirt anywhere, replaced bearings, flushed engine oil etc etc, rebuilt the calipers it was a mess.

Nowadays, it gets more oil changes than kilometers it seems (silkolene sponsor me) and its .... spot on. There is no reason to sell it, hence the whole pulling hair out part.

I rode the 954, and like it, but was hard too as i didnt have a airshifter on it, so had to lean down and change gears (incomplete para, have only few muscles in legs, and nothing knees down so need shifter), it seemed thinner for some reason, maybe just the look of the tank and upper fairings.

If i do get it, it will go white yellow and black as my business theme colour is. May even restore it back to original looking scheme, white base yellow and black wings ... dunno.

Fact is i cant keep all 3. If i could, id have it already, but i have a plan and it involves spending coin i have for brick paving, and balustrades around the stairs at the house ... lets hope the mrs loves bikes as she always says she does, keeping both for a little while and keeping the one i like.

Couple more pix

Of course you can guess what colour it will go ....

imho having had both 954 and 929 I prefer the 929. Seat of the pants dyno says its as quick on the road, and on the road anyway the handling is not noticably different - doing a track on 11 Sept so that will tell me a bit more about it.

Ok my 954 was stock and the 929 has a pciii.

personally I wouldn't swap out that fine example of a 929 you already have tbh.

I never had a 29 but love my 54.

Partial Para, congrats man on getting out there and doing your thing.

I personally like the keep all 3 option. I am so glad my wife rides and loves me enough to not care about the size of our motorcycle stable.

Saf, maybe it's because I haven't eaten breakfast yet, but your picture cbr929tank05 looks like a mirror image to me. All the decals are reversed. Hmm????

Phadreus, Yes they are reversed mate :). Confusing at times right ... :) .. its a "one way" sticker theme on the bike, as used in Japanese drift cars that gave me the idea, its a great marketing tool, as people stop and look at both sides of the bike, and while they are doing that, are READING the sponsors on the bike :).

Bladeracer, Perthie !! haha, cool mate. What number are you ?. Ill be at round 5 i think, had a quiet year, ill come back for a couple days this year.

Number 50.
Only been doing the HCMC days this season as I'm still not 100% recovered from my '04 crash but I hope to do MCRC and HCMC next season. Next round is Collie next Sunday.
I've been hoping to get my '85 GSXR ready for some track time to sort the chassis but got sidetracked with some real life - I'm up tonight machining the triple clamps :)
I still might get it together in time but I'll definately have the 929 down there. I'd like to get the GSXR out at Barbagallo though this season before I build the engine over the break ready for next season.
Then I'll start building my '90 GSXR to get it ready for season 2010 historics :)

I had a 01 929 and my buddy bought a 02 954 becausehe could not keep up on his 600 I rode both and prefered my 929 stock there was only about 5hp difference and I liked the ergo's on the 929 better.

I can comment on both. I have owned a '00 929 for 6 years, ride the hell out of it, have Racetech front end, and an Ohlins on the rear, Power Commander, K&N air filter, Corbin seat. Only complaint I've ever had is the touchy throttle on the bottom end.

A friend bought a used '02 954, and I took it for 4 weeks and did a tune up on it, as well as restored the bodywork(turn signals, tailights, etc.) to factory trim. Added a Power Commander and double bubble windscreen for him, changed plugs, oil, filter, K&N for the airbox, etc. I rode it for 3 weeks straight.

My thoughts:

The 929 has one of the BEST chassis I've ever ridden on in 20 years. For a modern streetbike, I've never ridden anything so hard, with such confidence. The 954 chassis just never felt right, it was more twitchy and more work to ride, it wasn't comfortable.

The 954 has a SWEET motor. I could definitely feel an extra 10 horses, and it had a SLIGHTLY better power band. Very minute, but enough to tell the difference. It sounded a bit better than the 929 too.

The perfect bike? A 929 with a 954 engine it.

That not being possible, I'd say stick with the 929, you will use the chassis EVERY moment you ride and lean off it, the extra horses on the 954 are not worth the tradeoff, you can only use the extra speed and acceleration about 10% of the time you are riding it.

Eh, chocolate or vanilla; which is better...same goes for these two bikes. Specs makes one look a little better on paper but there is no way to objectify the subjective. It's all in what you like....

That 929 is a keeper. IMHO not worth it to get a 954 and have to get rid of an excellent 929 that's already sorted out.

Good Luck with your decision.

hi I live in the Isle of man and own a 929. I have done a 'circuit' on the 954 and to be honest it didn't feel significantly better and I chose not to upgrade. depends if you want to look good or just piss on the the slower riders and the 929 is more than capable of that and its a great feeling passing guys on newer so called faster bikes.
