So, like, when I was getting my 929RR sitting at 397 lbs., I was happy that it finally was going to be in the weight class of the new/newer litre bikes, as my first bike was a '94 zx9r which weighed around 470+....but today I decided to delve a little deeper into the subject and looked up the weights of new bikes, and I was absolutely baffled to find out how much lighter the 929 is!! :D

I was convinced that as bikes get newer, the manufacturers focus on 2 things, always getting more horsepower, and always making the new bike lighter than the previous generation. However, I guess that isn't necessarily true, huh?

I even looked up the weights of the brand-spanking-new ducati 848, zx6r, gsxr 750, and was amazed to find out that my 929 was at least 30lbs lighter than all of them!

So, what exactly makes the 929's so light? Because I'd love to know!

Also, what makes the new gsxr 750 faster in the 1/4 mile than my 929RR? granted it's only a tenth of a second faster, but still. How is it faster when it has less hp and weighs more?

Is the 929RR so light because of the lack of actual horses that Honda packed into the engine?? :rotfl:

The modern bikes are way lighter than the 929.
The current GSXR750 is 190kg fully wet, 929 is 196kg.
Where on earth did you read that the GSXR750 has less power than the 929? The 750 has more power, and it spins up faster so it makes its power faster. And it has _much_ better aerodynamics.

The weight that you are going by is most likely without fluids. I know the 954 is a bit lighter than the 929 and it weighs in around 425-430 lbs. wet. I don't agree with bladeracer that the newer bikes are way lighter though.....at least not based on their manufacturer specs.

Edit: Just looked it up and the wet weight of a 2012 CBR1000RR is 441 lbs.

Claimed weight and claimed bhp is nonsense anyway.

The newest bikes have more complex exhausts to meet emissions requirements. The cbr has abs brakes. There a few kg each right there.

If you mean the figures are not accurate I disagree. All bikes I've weighed have been specified accurately by the manufacturers. I never seen anybody test the engines on an engine dyno to confirm Bhp numbers, but hp outputs are certainly near enough to consider the manufacturer's claims to be accurate in my opinion.

Fit an a full Akrapovic exhaust , Ballistic Evo2 battery & 520 chain & supersprox light weight sprocket & the bike will be another 10 kgs lighter , which will amke it weigh as much as todays bikes . I have got my 94 blade down to 175 kgs (dry )

Okay so obviously the 379 i'm using is the dry weight. As for the numbers of the other bikes I mentioned, I was reading the current edition of the magazine Cycle World. So, after everything you guys have said, they were probably using wet weights (although it wasn't specified as such), and as for the horepower...probably stating the wheel hp? The current gsxr 750 was stated at around 125-130 from what I remember.

According to 1/4 miles times in that magazine, and a 1/4 mile time I read online for the 929, only the gsxr 750 (out of the gsxr, zx6-r, and ducati 848) was faster, and only by a tenth of a second

What doesn't help is that manufacturers don't always use the same method of weighing the bike. Some will count the battery, some won't. Some will count the base model, whereas some will use the version with the expensive titanium and carbon exhaust. Then you have the people who review the bikes (and other media) who'll count everything except fuel as "dry weight" (my preferred method of counting it).

I think it's daft how they claim the weight of a motorcycle without ALL the necessary bits it needs to run. It's like taking off the wheels and saying "We've saved 25lbs over last year's model".

hahaha that's well said, Sky. I too, think that the best way to specify the weight is to include everything except for gas.

The other thing to remember on the 1/4 mile times is that they post adjusted or corrected times for elevation, temp, etc. Most of the bike within the last 10-15 years are really close in performance (as far as specs) so it really comes down to the riders ability.
Just know that you have a very capable machine and it doesn't take a whole lot to bring it up to par with a modern bike.
That's why I'm still on my 954.

Gotchya. By no means am I being ungrateful, but I wish I had a 954!! lol. Not even for performance necessarily, but the looks. It has that more aggressive look, and slimmer/pointier lines (especially the tail) which makes it look more modern.

954 are getting very affordable now but then so are the 04 blades!! See them for £3500 on ebay now
More affordable than the $3200 I paid for my '01 929RR with 15,200 miles around 1 month ago? :D Granted, it has a reconstructed title, but the accident was just the bike being tipped over and the owner collecting insurance money for it. I've had to put virtually no money into it so far, and I hope to keep it that way for a bit longer! lol

does anyone else seem the resemblance between this evil laugh :evilaugh: ...and the headlights on a 954?

I understand completely. I got a great deal on my 954, so I really couldn't complain but I REALLY wanted the 1000RR because I liked the overall styling and tail better, esp the undertail exhausts. Also the reason I liked the older R1's.
You could always mod the tail on the 929... :smilebig:

exactlyy. I got a really good deal as well. To this day, my favorite looking bike is still the '06 generation of 1000rr's. That little divot in the nose makes me like it more than '04-'05's.

And good point :plus1: If this bike is going to be a long termer for me, as in greater than a years worth of ownership, then I'll definitely be looking into a 954 tail replacement

An 06 1000RR was what I wanted, but truthfully you see a lot less 954's so I kind of like the exclusivity. I really am a big fan of all undertail exhausts though so my dream bike is the MV Agusta. This has it all!

another :plus1: for the exclusivity comment. I'm with you there. CBR's in general are rare around where I am. I literally haven't seen ANY cbr yet, let alone a 954 or 929

WHY have I never seen that bike before!?! I love everything on that bike, minus the headlight. The single-sided swingarm..the undertail..the tail itself... oh my god I think I had a crisis

LOL! I agree again! The headlight is the only part I'm not super keen on, but the MV's are super hot. They sound awesome and come with all the high performance stuff as well. Downside is you pay the price for that Italian hotness.
