One of the saddest days I had with my dad was when I had to stop him driving due to his progressing dementia. He was already on annual medical tests for continuance of his licence and he had always loved driving. It was one of the freedoms in his life, but mum and I had to persuade him to stop. No bad accidents, thank goodness, but attention levels were declining rapidly.

Do you have progressive medical checks in the US due to age or illness, where more frequent checks and renewals happen as people's ability declines?

Unfortunately not. There should be tests yearly or every two years to keep a license once you hit 60, but the old mob won't allow it.
