Not so much a request for help as a chance to vent. Since getting my 2000 929 back on the road It's been plagued with an oil leak. I've tried a few times to locate the origin of it by taking off the lower fairing and looking around. No luck, but the past few times I've driven it to work when I come out after my shift there is a small puddle of oil below. I can feel that it runs down the inside of the lower fairing just a small amount, but still no luck locating the source. With temps here in the mid 50s I got off my ass this morning to track it down. After cleaning off the bottom of the engine to locate source (and finding a suspension bolt loose) I let it run for a bit.

With a cleaner engine near the leak it should make it easier to locate, right? Well only if the damn thing starts to leak. I tried to ride it for a bit and damned if it hasn't dropped a single drop of oil. Murphy's law pretty much states as soon as I put the fairing back on I will suddenly get a leak so I'm trying to find it still. So either it's magically fixed or I will have to dig in yet another day.

You are not alone. I took my 01 929 into the house for the winter and after a few days there was one drop of oil under it. I found a little on the panel but not enough to locate the leak. Then after a few more days an other drop appeared. I wiped everything down real good and waited. Sure enough a few days later a drop appeared and I was able to trace it down to the seal right at the shifter. Good luck hunting.

Looks like having it sit for a while was the ticket. Hooray I have a leak!....wait that's not good. At least I found it's leaking around where the water pump goes into the case.

Looking at the service manual to r/r the waterpump it doesn't indicate engine oil needs to be drained, just the coolant. Seems a bit strange if it's leaking out out there, but does anyone know if this is the case?

If it's just the o-ring around the pump housing that's an easy fix.
Don't need to drain the oil.

Easy if you don't botch the job and pinch the new o-ring during installation. :rant:

Yeah, I did that.
We've all done the same :)
You need to smear the o-ring with some grease before sliding it in.

Yep, I did that on the second attempt. The first time I just coated it with oil and it slipped around too much is my guess.

Wait, is it possible for it to slip around too much? Hrmm... :rotfl:

Went to the local Honda shop with the intent to order the gaskets and work this weekend some. Not in stock as expected, but the worst part was "Oh we normally stock these, but are out" Don't tell me that ****. If it's not on the shelf I don't to hear that had I shown up a week earlier I wouldn't have to wait. Dealership FAIL!

Finally got the time to replace the o-ring and all is well. One note is that try as I might I had to drain the cooling system to pull the pump out far enough to replace the seal. It's all good now and no leaks. Thanks everyone.
