I could spend a grand on a full Akrapovic Race exhaust for my 954, or I could buy a notebook. Look, it's not like I've got that sort of money just to toss about indiscriminately, but every time I think about some mod that costs $300 or whatever, I think to myself, 'That's a third of a notebook, or at least what I think I can get a decent notebook for.'

I envision the day I don't have to come down into the basement to get online. I dream about a nice notebook lying in my lap while I rest comfortably on the couch upstairs on the in bed with the little lady while she reads a magazine...and I leave this desktop machine to the kidlet and his friends. Wouldn't that be super, a notebook with wireless network card so I could surf and write e-mail and post on my boards and not be tied to the basement?

Okay then, my question. You've got a grand to spend (give or take a hundred, or two tops), including the wireless network card and router.

What do you purchase and from where?

I'd get a Dell, and I would most definitely get a Notebook instead. You can get the same performance from a Hindle for less than 1/2 of what you'd pay for the Akra anyway.

Dell.com or someplace else? Any first hand experience?

And for the record, I'm not in the exhaust market. I was just shooting off at the mouth, standard MO if y'know what I mean. Besides -and no offense- I dislike Hindle stuff.

How far off is this dream you're envisioning?
Remember one thing: Notebook computers lose value faster than dropping a brick off the roof of the station. They are not upgradeable, either.
If you plan on this vision coming to fruition right away, buy one. There are always deals going on where you can get a farily good machine under a grand. If it is some time off, don't waste any money yet.

Chain if you are just looking for a notebook to surf the net and what not, I'm sure for a grand you can get something nice to serve the purpose that will last for a long time. The net and basic stuff doesn't require all that processor power, nor the RAM. Most of the newer laptops have plenty of memory and processor power, the only thing you might need to upgrade in the near/distant future is the hard drive as many of them come with small drives.

Dell...off Egay. We've got five in the last couple of years the last two less than a year old with OS less than $600 each. Dell Lattiude LS $250-300...lightest smallest out there.

I bought a new Dell notebook about three months ago, which serves as my primary work computer (and secondary home computer). I have been absolutely blown away by its great performance for less than a grand. We bought it from dell.com. They have some incredible deals.
