Kansas Shoppers Step Over Dying Woman

WICHITA, Kan. (July 4) - As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.

The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.

Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation.

"It was tragic to watch," police spokesman Gordon Bassham said Tuesday. "The fact that people were more interested in taking a picture with a cell phone and shopping for snacks rather than helping this innocent young woman is, frankly, revolting."

The woman was stabbed during an altercation that was not part of a robbery, Bassham said. It took about two minutes for someone to call 911, he said.

Calloway, 27, died later at a hospital.

Two suspects have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect who turned himself in had not been charged as of Tuesday, the Sedgwick County prosecutor's office said.

The district attorney's office will have to decide whether any of the shoppers could be charged, Bassham said.

It was uncertain what law, if any, would be applicable. A state statute for failure to render aid refers only to victims of a car accident.

Eagle columnist Mark McCormick told The Associated Press he learned about the video when he called Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams to inquire about a phone call he had received from a reader complaining about a Police Department policy that requires emergency medical personnel to wait until police secure a crime scene before rendering aid. McCormick said Williams then unloaded on him about the shoppers in the stabbing case.

"This is just appalling," Williams told the newspaper. "I could continue shopping and not render aid and then take time out to take a picture? That's crazy. What happened to our respect for life?"

Yeah and post arrest once the crime gets into the "system" it gets even more revolting I think, looking out for the so called "rights" of the criminal while the family has to come to terms with it.

whats worse is say that someone did help her, and she still died, that person can be sued for not be in a medical profession in some states. Its sorta like a catch 22, but still should have called 911 sooner imo too.

People today don't want to get involved, and don't care anymore. Here in SA we just got the new stats for crime. It's revolting. Murder went up by 25%, Bank robbery by yes believe it a 118% i can keep on going. The sad part is that we as people can make a diffirence, but are to scared or think all is a joke. being 27 and to die, so much more to live for.

That's it, people these days, many of them do not want to get involved, because they are worthless self motivated pieces of sh*t. Some are too scared or frightened to get involved.. that's just dumb. If you can't put your own life aside to help someone who is in desperate need, you don't deserve the life you have.

If that woman was bleeding they could have gotten enough towells and napkins to put over the wound to stop the bleeding until the EMT's got there.

many states have a "good Samaritan" law that states if you are trying to help an injured person or someone in need you can not be sued for doing so. AZ has that law and i believe CA has it too. To go one step further in AZ you can be thrown in prison for not helping someone in need so long as it does not endanger your own life by doing so. Excellent law.

Next time anyone thinks about not helping someone imagine what would have been if those people on 9-11 did not stop those hijackers in that airplane over Pennsylvania. Their brave and honorable. If you want to be a person of honor you can't just stand back or watch.

People only care about themselves and how much money they got. Mo money mo problems, you've heard that before. Fastrr, have you read/researched about everything 9/11? Im by no means a conspiracy theorist but there are many many questions about Flight 93 and everything else, so look around before assuming what is on TV is real and factual. But all in all I am a helpful sob. If a car/bike/truck/etc is on the side of the road I stop to see if they need anything. If a women is by herself walking to her car at night and nobody is around, I wait to see she makes it to her car. If someone is crying or hurt I want to help their situation to make it a better day for them. Help people help people, thats the only way to be. Do to others what you want done to you. This is basic ****, but unfortunately most people only care about themselves and how much money they got.

I've read some of the conspiracy talk about 9-11. I think that a fire excellerant ( forget the name of it) was used on the trade building towers. I haven't heard nor do i want to hear about b.s. about flight 93. There were living heros on that flight as far as i'm concerend. It was recorded via telephone what was happening. That's all i want to know about it really. I think Bush has turned out to be a crappy president. I like the guy, but not his politics, and he doesn't know jack crap about foreign diplomacy. I hear his dad got pissed at him for revisiting Iraq. Amnesty for illegal aliens.. screw that. Their lucky us legal citizens don't beat them down. Gov't is phucked. I don't care what farmers say about needing cotton pickers and orange grabbers for their crops, theirs plenty of imigrants that are here legally that WANT to do that work. You can bet your a*s if that was one of the only jobs i could get I WOULD DO IT. Somebody b$#@ slap Condolica Rice for being such a puppet.
