At what point can you personally justify buying a new bike over maintaining your fireblade? Does your emotional attachment keep you pumping cash into a money pit? Do your overflowing coffers allow you to buy a blade every time your current ride is due for an oil change? Is there a certain amount per ride/month/year you won't go over?

Meet Fiona,



I just bought new sprockets, new chain, brake pads all around, and sparkplugs. Since I bought her, it's been a new front wheel, rec/reg, frame sliders, and tires. I need to clean her carbs and I'm 1k kilometers past the 36000km service so an expensive valve adjustment is in my near future. I'll probably take my time and try and do it myself as a valve adjustment will cost me about 25% of what I paid for the bike.
She runs loud and rough, but every time I think of just saving the money for a new bike, I feel bad. She's sexy, fast, and fun. I'd feel terrible letting her go into disrepair just so I can replace her with her younger sister. What might convince me to upgrade is ABS, as I ride Fiona year round here in Sweden.

well i personally have as much if not more fun riding older bikes. sure there not as fast or nimble but there is a certain involvement i have found gets lost on the newest bikes. having said that i have seen some very astoundingly awesome rebuilds of say late 90's blades. id personally probably enjoy the pride and work that goes into taking a tired old blade and making it born again new. the cash youd spend on a new blade, 14 thou n up would make a really really bad ass 90's 900. there is this article on buying new or building old of a cbr1000rr and a cbr 954. pretty cool article..

I've had close to 40 different bikes. I love the Blade. Always been on my bucket list. It's everything I want it to be. It's a long distance tourer (8 day 2000km tour last year) it's a badass wheelie machine, and can run with the new bikes with little issue. She loves being ridden and begs for more. I suspect she'll be in my shop for a long long time. New would be awesome but anyone can buy a bike! I've got close to 90000Km on her and she has many touches that make her mine!

For now, I'm quite content with my 2000 RC51. I bought it crashed and rashed for cheap, put 8 months, $2000, and countless hours into rebuilding it. I still can't outride the bike, and I continue to put the top mods on it. I've gone down twice on it, so it's not as pristine, but only missing a couple black stripes and light scratches on the red paint. About 2 years ago, I put an Ohlins shock out back, now hoping to have DK do a vavles and springs workover to the forks.
It just keeps getting better and better :D

thats a nice rc51 jondog9, thats one a the few bikes ive never riden. i was looking at those and the 04-05 cbr 1000rr when i got my 954. it was basically a toss up n the 954 just kinda fell in my lap before the others. i really like the tail end of the rc51, not to mention the rims. im thinking of getting the sp2 rims n fitting them to my 954....

Besides the fact we both were at Laguna in 93, your bike is awesome. And I love the old photo. Get that thread going son!

These are all just teaser photos. I am in LA right now, and found a bunch of pictures at my dads house, I am scanning them into my pc as we speak.

The first 1000RR was the last Honda I had any interest in, but it didn't do enough for me to want to own one.
All the modern bikes for me are essentially the same. The only new technology I'd have any interest in trying is the Big Piston Fork, but I'm not going to buy a bike just for that, I'll probably pick some up off Ebay one day.

Bikes are an expensive luxury toy, expensive to own, expensive to run. If you're going to borrow money to own one then you also have to insure it, add both those expenses to the first year's depreciation on a new bike - you'd have to be an idiot in my opinion :)
If you're a US sportsbike rider doing 1000 miles per year or less, then it's even stupider. Just go and give your money to a race team and you can look at their bikes instead :)

Buy an older bike that you can actually afford without borrowing for it, and ride it as much as possible to get your money's worth out of it.

December 1989 when I picked up my '90 GSXR750...and two weeks ago :)

Ok, so it seems many of you decided to convert your Fireblade into a track bike. What made you change it over and (presumably) buy a new bike for the street? Did it get to expensive? Did you lay her down?

I bought the 929 purely to race, then licenced it later so I could ride her to track days. Got lots of other bikes already so I never have a shortage or road or race bikes.
It'd be cheaper to just fix a road bike than go racing, racing is not cheap :)

not sure I could bring myself to sell my Fireblade. When I first started riding motorcycles in 2002 I saw one in the showroom and knew I wanted one some day. When I got back from Korea in 2009 and a couple of my friends where getting brand new 600rr's I figured the time had come. I searched craigslist and found a 2001 929rr with 6400 miles for 4k in perfect shape! Every ride on it is just perfection and even though it was rated as an also ran in the year it came out the 929 is an amazing motorcycle. it has never been anything but my dream and the only way I would possibly replace it is if it became my track bike and I got something else for the street to soak up the miles. I can't wait to ride it again this September when I get back to the states from japan. I toy with the idea of getting a 2008+ Blade for all the new advancements but when I look at the spec sheets of today's bikes I cannot bring myself to drop that money when I already have the best bike ever made by man. the 929 is perfection in my eyes.

i understand how you feel about the 929, i feel the same about my 954. ive ridden the 08 cbr 1000rr and id put the 954 up against it and altho i love the 1000's as well im pretty in love with the 954 at the moment.

For me it is track only, so it was different bikes for different moods... ;)
