Soon I will be taking my '02 954 off the road for winter and am planning some mods and other goodies as something to do for kicks. She is bone stock now and makes plenty of power as you all well know. But more is better. Ofcourse the well known stuff is just that - well known: Full system PC3. Those are on the xmas list. But what can I do to the motor. Cams? Port Polish, anyone done these things. I want more power over all. Trying to avoid a sprocket mod. But that may be added in the mix as well. TIA.

Porting the head would more than likely provide increased torque all across the band. I remember a guy doing this to his 929 a couple winters back and had pretty nice gains. I think it also cost him ~$700 however.

Doesn't sound like a bad price considering the cost of a full system and PC3.

Why not the sprocket mod??? It's the least expensive, easiest to do, most reversible mod available. Speedo correction is easily done with relatively little money.

Now we are cooking.
1) Porting - I talked to a local guy who says he had it done on his bike before by another local guy for 450. So put that on the checklist.
2)Full system and PC3 - I dont care about looks or sound - just wieght and HP. What system should I get?
3)NOS - OK Ill bite - what size shot dry and what size wet - I would be more inclined to run a small 40 shot dry right into the intake myself. But who known.
4) Where else can I save weight? Rear sets, Brakes, Wheels maybe?

Unless the porting job is done with flow testing there's no way I'd pull the head off and let someone start grinding on it. If they're just going to polish the exhaust ports, that's not too bad. In either case, I think the gains will be minimal compared to the work required. Don't forget about the cost of parts. Pulling the head off and putting it back on requires plenty of gaskets, valve guides and I'd recomend new head bolts. Polishing the intake ports is NOT recomended.

If you do pull the head you may want to consider skimming the deck. I don't know how many people here have done that, but I'd do a search. You'll gain a bit of compression.

Also, I don't know how many miles your bike has, but the cam shafts on my 929 wore down. I know that didn't help my power generation.
