x Harley rider needs advice

Do you have a full faced helmet?

No not maybe gloves.... Definately armored jacket, motorcycle specific riding boots (NOT cheap work boots, they will not protect your ankles... I've a limping friend to prove it). leather palmed gloves and at the least ballistic overpants.

I know its a pain in the ass to dress special to ride, but in the event of a crash (which I've had a few of with injuries) I can tell you it is sheer ignorance not to wear the proper gear.

You would't play full contact football with a tshirt and ballcap on would you? Same idea here, just much harder contact if you hit something.

I would't get that bent out of shape about what brand of each to buy, just get current production gear and you'll be fine.

BTW... you need all that same gear to ride any bike, Harley or not. unless your harley has seatbelts, doors and 4 tires that is.

lus1: I agree.

I would say helmet, armoured bike jacket and trousers, motorcycle gloves and boots are a minimum.

All The Gear All The Time!

As above , leather jacket with shoulder and elbow armour (not cheap foam) and leather pants (as you call them) but if not kevlar reinforced jeans are pretty good, normal jeans will give you some pretection as long as you always remember to fall off under 25mph....., go full face on lid, if you loose front end (and you can) the first thing to hit the ground will be your face, trust me, good glove thick enough to protect , but thin enough for feel. and last but not least boots to protect toes and anckles, make sure when you undo the zip that there is little resistance to pull the off, for when / if you break you ankle.....Oh! and sswafenk98 (You would't play full contact football with a tshirt and ballcap on would you? Here in it is november in oregon which can get cold early morning & night ( I rode home it was about 40 with wind a chill in the air ) :smilebig: , I still ride my harley I have frank thomas pants which are great for the weather we are having now they are great I dont even feel the cold. As they have a insulated liner, rain repell, have the amor in the knee. I would say shop around I got these at a steal of a price when a local shop was having a clearance sell normal price at $140.00 I got the like have price but they are worth it.

Nice bike, I also rode Harleys for years. I had shorts, sandals and a Hawaiin shirt and sunglasses.

Now I ride a Honda 599. (Same engine you have) I put a K+N air filter on it, Dyno jets and 2 bros exhaust and this bike hauls butt. The acceleration is amazing but the bridges cross winds make me nervous. The Harley was never a problem in the wind.

I got a nice Honda racing jacket off Ebay for $56 and it still had the price tag on it for $275.
The gloves were $20.
Although I only changed to jeans so far and my sandals are now Moccasins.

I am gradually changing my comfort zone to a safety zone.

Can I throw out a recommendation for the Icon motorhead leather jacket? Since you are an ex-harley guy, this may work for you. It will work on a sportbike, and on a harley. It also isn't 'cut' like many of the sportbike jackets which make a person look like a matador. It looks like a regular jacket. But it has armor and has very thick leather. It will keep you safe. And, with the liner, it will also keep you warm in winter. Remove the liner and the jacket is perforated, so it will also keep you cool in summer.
