I recently found out that there was a recall on the '02 954 Steering Stem Bearings. I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly what part I need to replace? I usually buy from www.ronayers.com - could someone send me the link to the part using there microfiche?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Kerry

Have you had the bike since new? If not R U sure it wasn't already done? Look for the punch mark on the frame S/N @the steering stem 1st

I wouldn't worry about it. Get a damper and be done with it.

Unless something else was issued as an official recall from Honda, the 'situation' to which you refer was not a recall . (As I bought my 954 new, Honda has not sent me any official recall notice. However, I did get an advisory if I regularly rode at sustained high speeds. Since I have no access to the Autobahn and I don't come close to approximating Rossi's skills, I don't worry about it.)

Rather, Honda issued an advisory for those who ride at sustained high speeds , such as track riders or those folks engaged in racing. Street riders have no concern.

The fix was to replace roller bearings with ball bearings. That does not make any sense to me. The VFR folks (yes, I was one of them and can attest that the roller bearings were way better) touted an upgrade from the stock ball bearing steering stem to roller bearings! Yes, I know this is a different model bike, but WTF?

My recommendation is don't worry about it. I haven't done anything and am very, very happy with the original roller bearing steering stem system with this model year. I do have a damper, and I agree with Rocket's advise to get a damper and forget about it.

Then on the other hand, you could just let the local service goons disassemble your front end i.e. remove wheel, forks and triple clamps after carefully removing the fairings (yeah, right) so as not to scratch anything, ... hammer out the factory bearings and hammer in the replacement and get a dimple somewhere on the frame to prove you got the downgrade. Oops, sorry! But if it makes you feel better, just go for it.

Get a damper. Every 954 needs one, even if you have the stem bearings changed out. Honda won't pay for that, so suck it up and just do it! Then ride the h--l out of your bike and enjoy! You'll be glad you did!

I have an 03' (ball bearings) and an 02' w/ the tapered rollers.

And after riding both back to back this past weekend, there is a slight difference in input sensitivity on the bars. Nothing drastic... but noticably twitchier tendencies from the 02'.

They both have dampers... so I just crank one up a little more than the other.

:thrdjack: Hey Hoagie. Can you post the full size version of the pic in your avatar?
I'm looking at going the all black route and I'm searching for pics of black 954s to help me decide. I'm thinking all black (matte) with stripped and polished wheels. Perhaps some red Fireblade or CBR954RR logos as a highlight.

Sorry for the jacking. Back to topic.
My vote on head bearings be would stay with the rollers and get a damper. In fact get a damper anyway. Scotts. :thumb:

Jeeze... a few drinkys and I get pic happy. :idunno:

Na the plates not legal, but I haven't been harassed about it. YET.

Back to topic... thinking some more about this, my front tires are the same brand and comparatively worn, I wouldn't think the bearing type would make a noticable difference though?

Thanks mate :thumb:
Looking good. I'm surprised the boys in blue don't give you a hard time with that license plate.
Is that legal in the US?
